If I remember right, Iowa state University in Ames devloped the round baler and then sold it to Vermeer. Would guess that that all happened in the 60's.

IN 1971 Gary Vermeer started working on a round baler all by himself no help from any university.
My family purched one after seeing one of his first demonstrations. And now 30 years later we have sold over 2,000 Vermeer round balers. I would think that we have sold more round balers than any other dealership of all makes.Carter & Carter Machinery, Johnson City, TN

I think Tim is about right, I bought a new IH in 1976, and they had been around for 3-5 years at time. Not necessarily IH but big round balers in general.

I think Vermeer was first in about 1971.
