I know that they flip over so you can go down the same furrow you just left, but other than that I have no clue.
Do they have a lever to drop the plow and to lift it, and a second lever to roll the plow?
Or does it flip the plow shares over when a fella is done with furrow and he pulls the rope trip to pull the shares out of the ground?
I may go buy one friday and want to know how the work exactly so I can assess the plow.
much thanks,
Aaron

Aaron,I have a tumble bug plow i use here at my place. The way mine works is it has a coil spring on a cam assembly with a lock.when i lower my implement it cocks itself so to speak. The weight of the implement pulling into the earth twists the spring and the cam assembly has a lock on it that holds the spring pressure. When you raise the plow it opens the lock and the spring rotates the plow around on its own.It is a really simple desighn that didnt take much thought but it works very well so long as everyone is clear of it when you raise it.I like it due to the fact it saves alot of time on my part.I dont have to start from the same end each time.I have only seen one other plow like mine and in fact it belongs to the same farm where i bought mine from. They are into bigger machinery these days so they dont use thiers.it just sits on the side of the road with all thier outdated implements.hope this helps!

I don't have any experience. There was a lengthy discussion on these back about 6 - 8 weeks ago. There was a guy plowed with one as a demonstration at plowing match here in Glencoe Ontario. In that discussion there was a second guy that plowed at a ploying day, I think it was Illinois, maybe Indianna. Check the archives.

I have VERY limited experience. My IH Model 39 had (I gave it to a feller with a tractor big enough to pull it...) a single trip rope. The trip rope actuated a cam. First pull dropped 'er in the ground. At the end of the pass, pull the rope again and she lifted outta the ground and flopped over. Get lined up for the next pass and pull the rope, back in the ground she goes, throwing the furrow the other way.

Both wheels have adjusting cranks to get the plow level as regards the land wheel and the furrow wheel.

Pretty danged ingenious, but I didn't have enough tractor to pull it or a big enough patch to play with on anyway.

I personally don't have a lot of experience with the tumble bug plow, but that is what my dad framed with the whole time that I was growing up.I watched him alot. and Aaron hit it on the nose.
Dad framed about 500 acres with that plow he'd start plowing in the fall 'til the ground froze, then come back in the spring. pulled it with a Farmall MD or if it was too wet an F20 with steel wheels
