Chuck W. posted a message at the beginning of December looking for baling implements in the Pacific Northwest. Did you find any? Small farms are rapidly disappearing in western Washington, where I am but there are still many farther north. I spoke with one fellow in the Bellingham area who wanted to sell a baler.

Michael...

Yes and no! A friend gave me a working JD 214 baler last fall, so at least the expensive machine was taken care of, but was looking for a sickle mower and rake when I posted. Found the first pair through Dan from Ellensburg who spotted them in the Yakima Herald classifieds. Connected with him here in this board, and he kindly offered to keep an eye peeled. I was about to go up and look at them, but then found some closer to home through a in-house classified at work that then showed up in the Giant Nickel. Bought a 7-ft New Idea mower that used to be pull and was converted to 3-pt/pto for $150. Needs one guard and one small weld, but otherwise, supposedly works. Bought a 3-pt drag scoop/bucket from the same seller for $50 that just needed a couple of cat 1 pins and the bucket pivot balls cleaned and lubed. After that, he threw in a Ferguson side-delivery rake that "needs work" :) that he had been asking $30 for. After looking it over at home, I think I could fix it, but too many projects this winter so don't have the time. So, am back to looking for a rake. Trying to connect with the one in Yakima again, but it may be sold.

Thanks for replying!

I'm in Mill Creek. Eh gads! My folks bought fifteen acres in 1961 for a song and a dance, or so it seems now. To them at the time, $350 an acre was quite a bit of money. Now, written offers come in weekly for 100,000.00 an acre! Since dad died, I'm trying to keep the farm in the family. (Am I fighting a loosing battle?) I've acquired some implements that dad never had in an effort to make the farm productive and change the tax classification. Every four years the taxes just about double. They will go up in 2003, but we can still handle them. So, right now I'm planning for the next tax hike. The farm house is 110+ years old and still sits on cedar logs as a foundation. The cedar, hemlock, and pine trees are 3+ feet across at their bases. This bulletin board has been a great help for me.
