I have a 51 A that runs like new and the clutch is in reasonable shape. The clutch bearing has been packed and it engages and disgages as it should. But--- when in gear and rolling I hear a very prominate squeak from the clutch area that can be eliminated by pushing forward on the clutch lever. Why does this happen???

John,

I believe your problem is the dust shield that is not centered correctly to the belt pulley. (I found this out the hard way) You will need to get a new gasket and put your sealer on. Snug the bolts down a little where you can still shift the dust shield. Put the belt pulley back on and spin it, tapping the shield until it is centered and not rubbing. Then you can take the belt pulley off and finish tightening your shield bolts. Good luck!

Mark

John, is there any chance what you are hearing is the pulley brake rubbing the pulley when you take your hand off the clutch lever? Probably not, but I had to ask. I also wonder if the splines on the crank and clutch drive disc are worn which is allowing the whole pulley assembly to run in too far. If you pulled out the clutch engagement fork, I wonder what it would look like? These are just a couple of quick thoughts. Oh, by the way, is the squeak intermitant or contant? Steve

Steve-All good questions. The clutch fork was replaced. The squeak is intermitant and sounds just like a piece of sheet metal hitting another piece and a drop of oil would cure it. Its not the clutch brake pully as I have raised it off the clutch while in gear and the sound persists. I think I will replace all linings and plates and see what happens or just let it squeak. Thanks for the thoughts John
