Ryan,

Check out some farm auctions. I would suggest you get one early in the spring or in the fall. As it gets closer to haying season the prices are a bit higher.

My 2 bits worth,

Ryan, Where are you at? I know where 2 of them are that look good and usable for small operation. He wants $400.00 for both. Hay rack is flat bed wagon with a back onit usually used for small bales of hay. Ones I found have 8x14ft beds on them.

Years ago, when loose hay was a way of life, the 'hay rack' was a extention to the old farm wagons to allow loading with loose hay. Varied from a slat frame over the standard three foot box to a complete platfom replacing the box. 'Hayrack' and 'feeder' were used interchangeably.

Just learned something new here myself, never knew a "wagon" was called a hay rack. Here a hay rack used to be a "range feeder" to feed small squares in. Can buy metal ones at TSC, our ag shop makes wooden ones. I have heard "hay rings" called racks, especailly some of the flat panels; used primarily to feed round bales. I use "rings" to feed cows, built a "pad" of crushed rock on class I sand over geotextile fabric. Get mine from a local dealer. Personally, I don't use them for horses, they don't seem to make as big a mess.

In my part of the world, a hay rack is a feed trough used for feeding small bales (and maybe some concentrated feed also). Has slats allowing livestock to pull only a small amount of hay out at a time.

Here in the midwest, when you say "hayrack", it means a flat bed trailer (usually 4 wheels, but sometimes just 2) that is used for hauling hay bales. Used mostly for small hay bales, not the big round ones. Most hayracks have wooden flooring and often some vertical boards at the back to stack the bales against.

Best place to find a hayrack is a farm auction. Might also check the classified ads. Ask around at some implement dealers that sell used farm equipment...they'll be able to tell you where to find some prospects.

Ryan,

What kind of a hay rack are we talking about. A flat rack or one for a baler with a thrower.

Ryan, Instead of the wagons for kickers, why don't you try the bale basket wagons. Those work slick, are easier to unload and you don't have to maintain the thrower on the baler. I ran some for over 10 seasons and really like them versus thrower wagon which I grew up on. Just my two cents Rick
