i have seen shear pins shear off and stay in hole on both sides, put pto in gear and see if your shaft on mower is turning, put to work and when it quits get off and see if shaft is turning ..you might have sheared a key in mower or where blades attach..have nice day may god bless

I've got an old 5' Brillion shredder that we've used as a brush hog for 40 years. That machine has spring loaded cages between the 2 square plates that hold the blades under the deck. The spring loaded cages are compressed against the square plates with fiber discs, which act as slip clutches. If these are worn or gone, it might appear OK until you try to cut with it. Then they'll just slip.

It has no other shear pins or clutches on the PTO drive line.

If you have some other type of pto operated equipment you might try it. If it's not the shear pin on the mower it could be you simply don't have any power to the pto on the tractor. That would be a bad thing! If it were mine I check that. Bad luck is my middle name...

Could the blades be on backwards/upside down?

could be either slip clutch or shear pin, both in the driveline between gearbox and pto shaft.

Thanks Russ,
I know it is not the shear pin, are the plates easy to see? I know they are cheap to buy, I am new to the tractor world.

It would be in the driveline attached to the input shaft of the gear box. Normally round plates with bolts and springs holding them together. If your driveshaft goes straight to the input shaft of the gear box via a yoke, then there is generally a shear pin that goes thru the yoke tying the yoke to the gearbox input shaft.

Some have clutchs, some have shear pins, some have both.

Did you find out what happen yet? If not, then here are a few more items....

Make sure the shaft is turning. If the driveshaft is turning, and the blades "appear" to be turning, then check the woodruff key between the Gearbox's output shaft and the stump jumper (Housing that the blades bolt to).
If the blades are not turning, and the shaft is turning, and you are sure the shear pin is okay, then you better have a look inside the gearbox. Some have the gears made on the shaft (1 peice) and some have a splined shaft that the gears slide on. If you broke a gear or some teeth you will have to replace the parts or buy another box.

I can tell when I engage my PTO that my shredder is turning because it gets allot louder and vibrates slightly. Even when my shear pin is broke, it feels like it's turning real good, but when I start cutting, the blades slow down and don't cut.

If you can give me a little more info I will try to help some more.

Thank's I just got back from my farm. I did open the gear box and the gears looked fine. I noticed some play in the shaft going to the box. Mine has two gears and one has a large nut with a pin on top. I took off the pin and tighted the nut. My cutter started cutting fine and then after a few passes went back to turning but not cutting. Mabey I need to hold the blabes with something to really bear down on the nut?
