Can anyone suggest a good site, source, or suggestions for taking CRP ground into production? I use the production word loosely as I'm just starting to grow foodplots for quail, turkey, & deer. Specifics on options for spraying & grass control appreciated. We limed & fertilized on fall plowed ground this spring. I plowed some more this fall for next spring & have shredded a lot more. If I have COOP spray Round-up on the shredded stuff- I'll still need to till to plant. I don't have drill or planter. Have plow, disk, cultivator, & use big broadcast seeder. Any advice appreciated.

Just disc it 2 or 3 times. your not worried about pushing production, or making a seed bed suitable for mowing hay. many annual weeds produce seed and better cover than millet, beans, or whichever is in the seed mix, figure plowing is $30/hr and light tillage will run $15/hr. Discing will also allow some sod to reroot which will hold soil in place and keep hunters from wading in mud.

I have been planting my CRP for wild life now for 10-12 years. I now have large Deer herd, Turkey, Quail, Rabbets. I get paid good for people to hunt on my farm. It has paid for all my improvements and taxes.

So- it has been a nice winter so far but too late to plow more before spring. If I have sod sprayed & then just disk things up will I have a terrible weed problem from seeds on top the ground now? What would be my best option- plow this spring? Thanks everyone!

I think you are required to turn any income you get from CRP including charging people to hunt game...

Conservation Reserve Program.

It takes ag land out of production (mostly for 10 years but there are different options), govt rents it from you, you must seed a fairly native grass on the land, and control weeds. You may not harvest it, unless there is a drought & you refund the money but still can't harvest all then, just enough to mess up your neighbor's hay company sales... It can be re-enrolled after 10 years.

The point was to remove questionable land from ag production and offer more native habitat for wildlife.

As all govt programs, it is _much_ more complicated than that, but that's the basics.

Brian,
Just hit me odd- are you taking ground that is presently in the CRP and putting it into production or has the land been out of the program since the last reenrollment date??

Still in program. Will be enrolled for a few years yet. This is just for the 10% allowed for wildlife.

OK. Had forgotten about that part. I know that the penalties for messing with the rest of the parcel are pretty steep. Here in se WY not enough wildlife to worry about- only antelope and most farmers around here would just as soon they starve so we could get rid of them.

When CRP first started to come out some years ago, some universities did research regarding getting those acres back into production. Most real farmers thought that was a waste of research money. Just do a good job of plowing and working down the sod like you would with any old hay field. If you have tillage equipment, can you hire your Coop with an airflow seeder to apply fertilizer and seed at the same time? That is more accurate than a broadcast fan seeder (fertilizer applicator) and for 4-6 bucks an acre, well worth the cost. Wouldn't hurt to work it in with a spike tooth or tine harrow, or lacking that, and EXTREMELY shallow field cultivation. Seed will end up about half as deep in the ground as your cultivation depth.
