when you put hay on a trailer should you strap it down. It is a trailer with only a back on it. I am talking about all the kind of hay bales even round

Just use common sense! Anytime on public road for several miles tye it. Bales hittin passerbys is not fun. Large rounds always tye, they are dangerous I haul small squares all year long loads very from 50 to 350,they are loaded with grapple. I always still tye if on public roads for miles. Paved road always tye cause of liability. Be real careful large round on hayracks even tyed on Local fellows always ends up flipping the whole wagon.

For me "it depends". My rule is unless in the back of a truck not over top of cab (square) or round I tie if I'm going on a 4 lane highway. 4 wheel wagons I never tie, goosenecks I tie, period.

(this is for trailers)Round bales I run 2 wide plus one stacked in the middle. Use a single strap front to rear hooked to a chain running side to side. Sqaures I typically load 5 or 6 full runs, and use a 2 bale tie with 2 straps front to rear and 1 cross strap on a 20 or 24' trailer. on 28's and 30's I add a cross strap. My rule of thumb is if it looks like it needs another strap., add it. Only hay I lost last year was on the front left corner of a couple of loads had a bale creep out and took out a few. Not a good feeling. We ship about a thousand rolls and 10K squares out. Then haul in another 5K squares. One rule I have is I never rick or tie a load for a customer to haul. Never let anyone else tie mine.

Depends, I bale 6 to 9000 sq bls/yr and lots of it goes to customers on the wagon straight to their barn. my barn @ top of fiekld I let any of the kids stack it, Only one or two of the kids can stack well enough to tow 7 miles at 35mph I don't tie BUT bales are heavy, and square.we stack 4 high with a tie tier at top and another across that, and a row across that makes 7 bales high. Bought some straw at auction today for a customer, stacked 3 high and tie tier drove very carefully, light and fluffy bales, 40 mile trip and I didnt tie down on the goose neck trailer
