Any of the big red users have an IH 400 planter with a scratcher attachment. A salvage/parts firm has what is described as a scratcher that mounts on the front of the planter and is used to level and control residue in the path of the planter shoe for better planting conditions.
I'm trying to learn from someone with first hand experience with this attachment and if it could be retrofitted to a JD 1240 planter.
Thanks,

I think what you are thinking about was made by midwest. It was styled like a field cultivator and mounted onto the planter. In early 60 and 70 years tehse were popular. They are dime a dozen in my area now.

Do you mean a row cleaner for no-till?

It could be a row cleaner for no-tilling.
The fellar called it a scratcher, however, it can be adjusted to fit different spaced rows so I was thinking it might be adaptable to my JD 1240 for controlling light to moderate residue on the surface ahead of the shoe planter.

It may work-I don't really know.I'm sure they bolt on,so if you can attatch them so they can be adjusted-they might do fine.Woild a rolling coulter to cut through the trash work better?
By shoe ,do you mean your JD has runner openers?
I always hated runner openers-they won't tolerate any residue.
Are these row cleaners made by Yetter?

Yep, the ole JD 1240 has runner openers. Good for traditional tillage. The row cleaners I'd like to get are made by yetter and cost about 250 bucks per row. Too much for such an old planter.Need to find a set of 4 that some big time operator threw in the corner of the pole barn and went with Rawsons or something better. The fellar that has this IH 400 row cleaner attachment called it a scratcher. I think it might be similiar to the unit that JD had available for the 1240 when new. A wad of springs attached to 3 little bars out in front of the planter and aligned with each planter runner. Pics revealed that lumps of dirt, residue, etc. would be flicked forward and away from the unit as you progressed forward. I plan to look at the IH "scratcher" soon. Still looking for those that are in the corner of the barn or maybe even over in the fence row by now.
