You can probably pull a 5-16 plow. However, a 4-18 will be a little easier on your tractor, not work the daylights out of it. Plus, the extra 2" will give you more clearence in trash. I pull a 4-18 (4 bottoms, 18" each bottom) with a 135hp tractor, and am happy with that. But I have some very heavy clay soils. With your 105hp, I'd just not want to work it as hard as possible, you can always drive a bit faster if the going is good.... If you plan on plowing cornstalks, you need CLEARENCE. They will plug up miserably. If you only plow stuff with less trash on the ground, than any old plow will work. Oliver (White) has a good reputation as an easy pulling plow. Newer ones hae more space between bottoms, and the main beam is higher, giving more clearence. I believe the newest are 588 or 598 models? The older ones plow as good, but less clearence. IH has some great clearence with their 720 models, or the newest 735 of course. The 710's are cheaper but the main beam is lower, stalks will plug up. I'm not so familiar with JD, but the old 145 models are fine if you don't have a lot of trash. You'd want something newer if you have trash to plow. The 1450 is not much better than the 145, I think their 2600 & 2800 are pretty good, but not so sure on them? I started with a 2-bottom trip Oliver plow - plowed great, plugged aweful. Moved up to a 4-16 JD 145, covered a lot of ground but it did pull hard - it was the 'D' version, deeper frogs on it - but swore a LOT in corn stubble. Moved up to a 4-18 IH 720, and plowing is fun. :) Has nothing to do with the color of the plow, it's the newer models have more clearence. We are steering you to semi-mounted plows, they hook up to the lower arms of the tractor, & the back is controled with a hydraulic cylinder. You might want to go to some of the machinery selling web sites like ironweb or farmtrader & look at the pics, get an idea for what you want & pricing ideas? Around my part of the world you would be looking at $750-1500 for a 4-5 bottom - a JD 145 or similar old-style no clearence goes $200-500. I stole my 720 trip bottom in great condition for $700 at a farm sale, but it was out of season. --->Paul
