I would like to draw on the combined wisdom of all the old plowhands and (attempt) a concensus of the most prudent choice of plow for a 4020 in sandy soil. My livelyhood is not dependent on it but my sanity and pride may well be! Also, for what its worth I am not against hydrolics being involved as I just had a birthday and am older than I was last year.... by the way, I love to disc but HAVE NEVER PLOWED BEFORE. thanks in advance to thoughtful respondents Bengine

My livilihood isn't dependent on my farm but my sanity is. I started with a JD F125 4x16 mounted plow and cussed everytime I used it. My farm has 8% slopes and the fields are contoured. The JD mounted plow works o.k. rolling the soil down hill but not up and it won't go around the bends of the contours. It also didn't have any clearance for trash and had to be reset manually each time it tripped on a rock.

I now have a auto spring reset IH 6x18 semimout in furrow with a hydraulic hillside hitch. The 6 bottom pulls easier than the 4 bottom. I've since cut it down to a 5x18 which should handle even better.

I'm a JD tractor fan but don't buy a JD plow. Hold out for an IH or possibly a White. White seem to be built heavier but I don't know how they pull.

You don't say how many acres you will plow. If you can get by with a 4 bottom 16" moldboard, I would highly recommend the old Massey Ferguson Model 74 trip beam plow. I have re furbished mine and my brother-in-laws. Shins and points are available. Works on the simple shearpin system with grade 5 5/16" bolts. The plow is standard Cat 2 3-point. Around here a good Model 74 with colters runs about $350-450.

You can probably pull a 5-16 plow.

However, a 4-18 will be a little easier on your tractor, not work the daylights out of it. Plus, the extra 2" will give you more clearence in trash.

I pull a 4-18 (4 bottoms, 18" each bottom) with a 135hp tractor, and am happy with that. But I have some very heavy clay soils. With your 105hp, I'd just not want to work it as hard as possible, you can always drive a bit faster if the going is good....

If you plan on plowing cornstalks, you need CLEARENCE. They will plug up miserably. If you only plow stuff with less trash on the ground, than any old plow will work.

Oliver (White) has a good reputation as an easy pulling plow. Newer ones hae more space between bottoms, and the main beam is higher, giving more clearence. I believe the newest are 588 or 598 models? The older ones plow as good, but less clearence.

IH has some great clearence with their 720 models, or the newest 735 of course. The 710's are cheaper but the main beam is lower, stalks will plug up.

I'm not so familiar with JD, but the old 145 models are fine if you don't have a lot of trash. You'd want something newer if you have trash to plow. The 1450 is not much better than the 145, I think their 2600 & 2800 are pretty good, but not so sure on them?

I started with a 2-bottom trip Oliver plow - plowed great, plugged aweful. Moved up to a 4-16 JD 145, covered a lot of ground but it did pull hard - it was the 'D' version, deeper frogs on it - but swore a LOT in corn stubble. Moved up to a 4-18 IH 720, and plowing is fun. :)

Has nothing to do with the color of the plow, it's the newer models have more clearence.

We are steering you to semi-mounted plows, they hook up to the lower arms of the tractor, & the back is controled with a hydraulic cylinder.

You might want to go to some of the machinery selling web sites like ironweb or farmtrader & look at the pics, get an idea for what you want & pricing ideas?

Around my part of the world you would be looking at $750-1500 for a 4-5 bottom - a JD 145 or similar old-style no clearence goes $200-500. I stole my 720 trip bottom in great condition for $700 at a farm sale, but it was out of season.

Thanks Paul and others for the excellent information. This is my first post and I really appreciate the input from you guys. Around my place there isn't much trash at all because I started with 3-4 year fallow field and brought it under production with hybrid bermuda grassa which I square bale with the 4020 and a hoelscher setup. I only have thirty acres of grass, but I want to set up for the future in the hope of having additional acreage that I can row crop here in North Central Arkansas. So, if I can learn to plow on the big garden, maybe it'll work on another 10-50 acres... At any rate, this is what makes farming and ranching enjoyable. I also have a JD 2120 (about 63 hp) with a single hole remote that may be a consideration as a second "plow puller" but has no upstroke on the hydrolic. Could it be used as I do on the wheel discs, so that there is only gravity force on the lowering action? It has been a minor consideration with discing as the whole 30 got triple disc in the cleanup phase when I started. Thanks again for all of the ideas. This site is super! Bengine

If you run into a White or IH 4x 18" that would be pretty good too. A little less plow than 5x16's. You won't get worn out pushing that 4020 around all day if it happens to be a little tired or your soil is tighter than you think. If you are on 34" rear rubber or lacking front weight, the four bottom may be a better choice.

5-16" probably is the best match. I could only pull 4-16" in my clay soils when I had a 4020. Since you have sandy soil, I am assuming no big rocks? Then you don't need automatic reset beams (although if you get a plow with them cheap enough, it doesn't really make a difference). Get one with good clearance under the frame for trash. White 548(?) plows and IH 720 plows seem to be most common where I live. Since I traded this fall for a 4430, I am now looking for a 5-16" auto-reset White myself, but they are still worth some money where I live.
