What is the best way to smooth out a rough hay meadow with bermuda grass? Break it up good and the disc leaves furrows and ridges. What would be a good drag to use? I have plowed them and thay would lok smooth and after the soil settles down and gets rained on and the grass covers thay will be rougher than before, what causes this? Plese give me some good advice, How do they make those alfafa fields so smooth? Thanks

If your meadow is well established, it needs to be
disced and a harrow pulled behind it, no roller or
drag of any kind is going to smooth it out, it
has to be tilled lightly and harrowed behind. If
the grass or hay is established well it won't hurt the crop, it may look bad for a while but will
come back better than before.

I will tell you how most of us around these parts to it. 1. Must do when grass is dormant; and it will actually stimulate growth and improve the stand.
2. Pull-type offset disk plow 2 times. Have disks turned very steep the first pass and about medium the second pass.
3. Tamdem disk harrow twice, with the second pass at 45 degrees to first pass. First pass with disks cut pretty steep and second pass with disks turned to a less agressive position (about half)
4. Tandem disk a third time and drag a large, heavy I-beam and the man below described.
Your hay field will be smooth.

Don't know about bermuda much other than on the fairways. As far as smoothing fields, for alfalfa in conventional tillage a lot of folks pull a cultipacker over it, especially to incorporate the seed (mashes them in the perfect depth). As I don't have one, I use the same drag that I used to use on tobacco ground. Plowed, disced 2x, hook the drag to the disc and disc 1x set to max cut and 1x set at minimum cut. For a drag I've got a piece of 12' I beam that I chain to a 12' disc. At the other place I've got 9 pieces of guard rail 8' 3 long, each one stacked 3 deep that I pull behind an 8' disc.

Rough Ride In late winter/early spring burn off
hay patch ! Then get a 20 ft section of Railroad
rail. (90lb/foot) Hopfully it will have holes at
each end, you will need to torch a hole in the middle. Get 3 HD u-shaped clivises..one for each
end and the middle. +-60 ft of 5/8 cable to make the hitch . Use this help level you hay patch.
Pick a direction then cross drag at a different
angle from the previous trip. With all the dry hay matter gone it shouldn't take too long.
PS. aloght disking may provide just enough loose
soil to work out nicely. If you have ?s e-mail me.
Good Luck
John A.

I have had some fair results by pulling a heavy roller over some of my fields in the spring time while the ground is soft but not muddy. It may not be golf course smooth but It seems to help some . At least I can hay with out beating my machinary apart. As I said it is not golf course smoothe but it seem to help in my fescue clover mix pastures and hay fields

Rough Rider, this is a real good question and I hope someone can let us know. When I established my bermuda field four years ago, I was advised to get it "just like you want it cause you have to live with it for a long time". This was advised before sprigging when it was all bare soil. The final step in my prep process was a good heavy rolling. Perhaps this would help with your's after discing. Other than that I'm not sure how you can effectively smooth with your established grass. You could go all out and disc (pulverizing) like the dickens twice over, harrow, roll and cross your fingers , but I've not had the courage or the time to try this with my field. I will see what others have to say...Best of luck to ya'. Father Cookie
