I've been wondering about a couple of things that I hope you fellows can help me with. I've got an old andy 500 "bushhog". I'm not sure how old it is, but works fine. Should I change the gear box lube? What is the best way to drain the old lube without turning the cutter upside down? Thanks for any replys....Bill

You should really chang the oil. A mower gear box gets hot when used and then cools off. The oil gets contaminated. Cheaper to change it than replace the gearbox someday.

Thought I had bought (slightly used for 300) the only Andy 500 made. I have used it for over 10 years and haven't changed the oil in it. Almost afraid to now that you mention it. Don't know who or where the Andy is made but is has been a reliable machine for me. I bought a six foot King cutter 2 years ago at a close out but still prefer to use the Andy. After I bought the new one I tried to sell the Andy but people steered away from it when they heard the name - their loss! They wanted a "bush hog" brand for 250 bucks.

On my "bushog" I just drilled a hole in the lower end of the gear box housing. I then tapped it with some threads and inserted a hex nut plug. Every spring I just remove the plug with my hex wrench, drain the old gear lube, reinsert the plug and install new gear lube until it flows back out of the top hole. FWIW

There should be a plug under the deck. Mine does anyway.

Far more don't have drains than do. You can buy a suction gun at any auto parts store and suck most of the old oil out, then refill. Flopping it over isn't a bad way to go if you can do it safely.
