I had a belt experience with my snowblower. When the original belt broke after 2 months of use, the dealer was out of belts, but sold me a "will-fit" that only lasted a half-hour. I called a Belt & Bearing dealer and ordered two "Industrial" belts of the same size. Never needed the 2nd belt, gave it to the guy that bought the snowblower 7 years later when I moved to Arizona.

Just buy the correct belt. Used to be a dealer, you would get a guy wanting a belt and the price would make him walk. Funny, but a little later, if he had the " guts" to come back, he would very quietly buy the correct belt. Or he would send his wife!

I tried several replacement belts for my JD 140 garden tractor and mower deck. None lasted as well as the JD belt. Dealer is some distance away, and it was an inconvenience to go get from them. Finally gave up and made the trip. Not only were the JD belts far better, but they were CHEAPER!

Check out a motion industries store. Tell them what you are going to use it for. Their prices are very competitive.

I put aftermarket belts on one once. Didn't save anything. They lasted half as long as the OEM. $65 isn't a whole lot of money anymore parts-wise, in my opinion.

It may have changed in past ten years, but during my farmning career belts especially high horsepower belts such as flail chopper, forage harvester, etc., you got exactly what you paid for. Believe me when a belt can harness the pto of a 50hp+ tractor it isn't a Mickey Mouse affair or even a fan belt.

Hugh is right. If you look closely at belts that "will fit" and compare them to OEM belts, the chances are that you will see quite a difference in construction. I'm not defending those outrageous prices but if you were to go to an industrial belt supplier, they'd show you what to look for in belt construction. Trust me , there's a world of difference between good , better and best.

MM, belts are often expensive when you go to the dealers and ask for a name brand belt but often the same company makes those belts for jobbers who sell them much more reasonably. Any v belt can be matched up at a NAPA, Carquest,TSC or other auto /tractor supply store. I bought a belt for my snowblower at an area supply store..MTD snowblower belt, they had one for $17.49..they didn't tell me they had generic v belts as well, a few days later I was in the store and came across their rack of v belts..could have gotten the same size belt for $7.49..cost me $10 to have MTD stamped on the belt...good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

If that's an automotive type "V" belt, you can probably take an old one to any autoparts store and match it up.

It's Jaydee Enterprises I mentioned, can never find them if I put the space in their name! :)

Link

I've got no connection to them, other than ordering there once. They have a _large_ selection of all brands of farm belts.

There is a place in Ohio, also A&I in Iowa- just heard they were bought by John Deere. For Gleaner belts, go to Gates, they make the Gleaner belts. Always a tough call, when you want to support the local dealer, so they can exist too, but why pay full price, when others can sell them for 2/3? A lot depends on how the dealer treats you, some do extra and deserve the business, while others stand off when you hit the door. Always a matter of personalities.

On my older F Gleaner, I HATED the dealer drive belt, it was cogged - supposed to be better, but it would strip off cogs. HATED those, went through one a year. Finally got ahold of a good solid belt, from the local Simplicity dealer who stocks a few Gleaner parts. He gets his belts from somewhere he doesn't tell me, but a 400% better belt than the junk I got from OEM!!!!

And, I'm still supporting the local dealer. :) That is a concern, I don't like to take money out of town & spend it on cheap imported stuff. Like you say, it's a balancing act. I try to treat them right, but they have to treat me right too.

I have the same problem with that belt on the F2, and can find nothing wrong with the sheaves. Would like to find a source for the solid F2 belt. Cog belts split between the cogs. I have two F parts combines, and that belt is a different length, so I can't use those.

My F ate those belts. It's the parts machine now. My F2 ('77) hasn't had a problem with belts. Like you say, different size.

I got the non-OEM belt for the F from Norb's Lawn & Farm in New Ulm - for some reason he stocks a few combine parts - 507-354-7450. I can gather more info if you need it, shoot an email or whatever my way.
