I bought what I think is a massey harris 3-14 plow last fall for $50. It didn't have shares on it so I used JD shares for the little plowing I did. Just last week I bought a 5-14 massey-harris plow for $100. All five shares are almost new plus it has two used shares. Was this a good deal. I only plan on using the 3 bottom behind my 47 JD A, the five bottom is for parts.

Trouble pulling 2-14's with a JD A? You guys must have been trying to plow granite!

You haven't plowed Hunterdon County New Jersey clay . . . . 4-16" is all a 4020 wants! An A would definitely struggle with 2-14" in some fields.

Sounds like you did well on your purchases. Depending where you live and if it is spring or fall, the A will not quite be loaded enough in 2nd but will lug in 3rd with the 3 bottom.

I live in Spangle washington. The soils here go from a silt to heavy clay with a little ash mixed in. Last fall I plowed a little with the 3 bottom in 3rd at about 6 inches. Didn't even know the plow was there.

It all depends where you live. Old 4+ bottom plows are about worthless, they sell for scrap iron prices. Too big for the collectors, and plug up too bad for real farmers to use. Add no-till, and big old plows are unwanted. 1, 2, or 3 bottom plows can go $400 because of the collectors tho!

I'd say you got a good deal as you will get your money out of it! :)

I bought a MH/MF(?) 3pt 3x14 for $150 about 2 years ago. Had all new wear parts and a fresh coat of paint. It is a "rigid" implement, i.e. your draft control is your only protection as far as I can see. There is no mechanism on the plow itself for "break away" protection.
