We have a Hayliner 68 that never seams to give nice square bales. The cut side always seams to be longer than the other side. Also, when you try to increase the bale tension to get a nice tight bale the knotters will miss. The slides in the bale chamber are in good shape and we went over the baler a few years ago and replaced anything that was worn out, but it still doesnt produce nice quality bales.
Thanks

I had a devil of a time with my 68 until I sharpend the knifes and adjusted them. I was breaking the flywheel shear bolt even through the timing was spot on and the knotter brake was replaced. I noticed that the bales were kind of ragged on the knife side coming out. The blades come out pretty easy, and I sharpened mine with a right angle grinder. The touugh part was adjusting the clearance of the knifes. I had to do this 2 times, using shims cut from a beer can to set things right. The baler now runs GREAT, gives fairly square bales, fairly tight. In fact the last batch I did was picked up with a NH bale wagon, with only a few coming apart.

Very common problem with New Holland balers. Yousimply are not getting even feed,in your case not enough material to far side of chamber. Keep adjusting feeder fingers. Thats why Deere runs packer forks. In my area they are called banana balers.

mike, on the knotters missing when the tention is increased, make sure that the springs that work the hay dogs arn't broke, or the hay dogs stuck. I have a 69 super liner, and after a little tinkering and adjusting works as good as a new one. yours will too, let us know.

What I have found out that works is buy the front and rear left side feeder tines for a 271 baler and replace the tines on the 68 and it makes a world of difference. As far as the tying problem, loosen the twine tension at the twine tension plates, replace the twine disc and the twine holders, check the twine guides and the groove in the needles and tighten the tension on the twine holder one flat at a time and see if it helps if not let us know. Hope this helps

I would echo the comment below. There are also a number of different length tines for the feed bar. If you put on extra tension and the bale has too much hay in one side the knot may pull out. I would also go through adjustments from manuel on knotters and make sure everything it correct. Also check hay dogs for springs and wear, they can make a lot of difference. Timing is also critical. There should be marks. I usually set NH balers so the needles come up just behind the face fo the plunger. As was said below the baler should make a nice bale.

Hi Mike,
Do you have a manual for the baler? if i remember correctly, you will need to make an adjustment to the feeder fingers, to put more of the hay to the opposite side of the bale chamber. i'm not sure about the lost knots. the baler is capable of making nice bales if adjusted.
