This might be a dumb question, but what's the best way to check a wobble box on a haybine if you aren't able to hook it up and run it? I will be looking at one shortly and want to check it out.

Any other things, other than roller condition, to check on a IH Haybine (owner not sure what model, but would guess 990).

Thanks for the help.

Hello,
first i'd look for the obvious tool marks and welds that show the unit has had problems in the past. then using a pry bar, check for endplay and side play in all bearings (tapered roller bearings). then look for signs of overheating. the play is adjusted by use of shims. too loose and the unit beats itself to a costly death. too thight, it burns up the bearings.

i've said it before, the IH wobble box is brilliant, but costly method of driving a cutter.
