Rob I have an old manure spreader, horse drawn but can not place the date of it. It is a New Idea Spreader and on the side it has a lot # 148... everything is there but it needs some cleaning up. Can you help me find out anything on it? It has the metal wheels also, the man I bought it from had it in his family for years, it was stored in his barn for over 30 years and I bought it over 3 years ago... Thanks Kate

Try Small Farmers Journal, Rural Hertitage, Draft Horse Journal. All are magazines that carry ads for such spreaders. All have websites. There is at least Peaquea, Better Built (Amish), Country Manufacturing ( Think thats the name), being built today. The Amish around here like New Idea 10 and 12's. Parts are still available. All the big companies made ground drive spreaders into the 60's. Not to be disagreeable, but JD has a poor rep in this area as far as spreaders go. The Amish refer to them as "unloaders" because they don't spread well, at least for the Amish I know. On the other hand, knowing JD they probably still have parts for them. BTW- steel wheels seem to pull easier and bite better than rubber.

Don,t know where you are. Here in Kansas there are a few good 4 wheel speaders that you could put a tongue in for horses some even have a seat on them. Pricey unless it needs lots of work done to it. Mostly just replace wood. Just a thought. In the right place you might find a tongue. Good luck Rob.

Pequea still makes a ground driven spreader that is designed to be pulled by horses. See the link to their page.

If you cant find a horse type spreader, get a ground driven tractor spreader and put wheels on the front. The John Deere R is one of the best. The R is a 95 bushel spreader.
