I am looking for a side delivery rake and the neighbor has one. I looked at it briefly today and it is a David Bradley. Sixteen inch front wheels and about 9 inch wheels in back. He said he had problems with the gear box when he last used it. I turned the reel both ways and it wanted to turn the tires so its not totaly shot in the box. I am going to try and pull the box apart and see what is all wrong before making him an offer on it. Are there any parts available for these anymore and were they any good? I don't know what model it is, but it's real low to the ground. Other than the gear box about the only thing I could see wrong with it was a rim was rusted out. The rest of the tires were up. I counted 5 teeth that were gone.

Any help would be appreciated.

We bought a David Bradley at an auction but it is missing one of the bearings. Does anyone know where I can get one of those?

My wife's uncle used to farm extensively and was a bit of a perfectionist. He has 2 DB rakes, both of them he dragged out of neighbors' fields and rebuilt them. He thought they did the best job of any rake he had. He's retired now, but I think the rakes are still on his property.

Does it matter whether the rake has 15" or 16" wheels on the front?

Older ones were 16", newer 15", the larger the tire is on circumfronce is the slower it will make the real run, orignal size 6:00x16" or 6:70x15", what is critical is the tires are completely matched as there is no differential in them as is the same for most groung driven machinery so there is no provision to accomidate a difference in turning speed as there would be with mismatched tires, even with the same tire on with one low on pressure while at work you will hear a click-click-click while running and that is the pauls in the wheels on one side, the slower turning side jumping trying to keep intime with the other wheel and will weare out the pauls verry fast and then you also have only one wheel doing the driving, The one we had was 16" wheels sold in 81 after the dairy heard left.

Standard 5 lug implement rim fits, make shure both drive tires are an exact match and same air pressure for same rolling diameter, miss sized will cause one wheel to do all the driving and cause the pawl's in the other wheel to ratchet all the time and they were not avaible 30 year ago but they are the same as used in the Oliver horse drawn mower

I bought a David Bradley rake at a sale for $10.00. All of the tires were flat on it but the machine was complete. When i brought it home just one of the back tires cost me $50 becuase i dont have any good tire stores around with that size. I took the rake out the next day and raked 15 acres and it worked perfect, but when i started i took out a fence post because i under estemated how far the rear wheels flipped out. The rake was so hevy built it didn't ever get bent, but the post was snapped off! Good luck with your project.

I have a pair of front wheels if you are interested. These don't match for some reason. One is a 15" the other a 16"

I am rebuilding one of these right now. I got it from a friend for free and it's turning into a big job. Parts are not available new but fortunately mine was taken pretty good care of. The teeth are no longer available as far as I can tell, but I have seen one equipped with the universal rubber mounted teeth. I am putting double John Deere teeth on mine they are the black steel ones at TSC about a $1.40 apiece and mount with one bolt, I am also fabricating new bars as mine are bent and worn. They are a real bear to move long distances unless you have a trailer. They don't do well on the road much over 5 mph or they start whipping back and forth pretty violenty not to mention how wide they are. I played with it a little bit and it worked pretty good but the teeth were rusted and started to break off pretty quickly. I found an owners manual on ebay for about 15 bucks and it is real helpful. If I had the money I probably would have bought a newer type like a 4 wheel pinwheel type, but beggars can't be choosers and I like all the attention the old timers give my odd assemblege of ancient hay equipment anyway. Good luck T.J.

www.sloanex.com Sloan Express. They list David Bradley rake teeth, I think $.85 each? These are single teeth though, not doubles. Don't know how many different types of rake teeth DB used.

I learned to rake with dads DB. makes corners easier than the new ones just long drawn out. I think dad even used it to ted damp windrows by either leaving it out of gear or it ran backwards I cant remember which. To pull down the road with the pickup we had an old spring and chain we would pull tention on one side to the corner of the bumper and that stopped the swaying.

There is an adjustable brake on each rear caster wheel to control that sway-wipping of the wheels, tha catalog says a transport speed of 50 MPH, no ted setting, by leaving out of gear and running over the hay would do a little lifting but not like a powered ted setting, that is wy New Idea is prefered
