Good Morning Gentlemen(and Ladies too?)I have a question about the techniques used to find hydraulic leaks. I'm curious about not only finding fluid leaks out of the system, but also possible air leaks into a system...any thoughts???
Thanks!

Air leaks into the system need to have some vacuum in order to suck in the air. This could be from a double acting cylinder with bad seals which is being forced to extend. The cap end of the cylinder holds more oil than the rod end, so extending it tries to pull oil from the rod end to the cap end and air from outside into the rod end. A more common way for air to be introduced into the system is with a leak in the pump suction line. The way I have seen more often than any other is to have a small and/or long suction, cold thick oil, or the reservoir below the pump coupled with a poor seal on the pump shaft which then sucks air into the pump just prior to sending it under pressure with the oil into the rest of the system.
