I have just purchased a new First Choice GM30-72 rear discharge finish mower from an on-line dealer and I'm very satisfied. The company was very easy to deal with (I don't know if I can post their name) and the price was much better than I could find locally. It arrived at the trucking co. four days after I placed the order and in perfect condition. All the parts fit perfect and assembly took about 2 1/2 hours. I looked at several different brands, Woods, Bush Hog, Howse, before choosing First Choice. I think you can pay more but you can't get better quality. At 550 lbs. my Mahindra 2810 pulls this mower with no front end weights, perfectly. I've only used it to mow about three acres, so far, but the mower is very smooth and I am 100% satisfied with my purchase. You fellows let me know if I can post the Dealers name.

A buddy of mine lives in Houston, TX and he is suppose to send me the information of a company that builds Shredders and Finishing mowers there that are 100% galvanized. I'm not sure how much more they are but surely they ought to last much longer. I'm kind of curious why you don't see many galvanized decks out there?

The Woods Brushbull is designed so water won't sit on the deck!! I'm not sure galv. would be an improvement over the design they have! Even my oldest Woods rotary cutter deck isn't rusting, (it always sits out side) but it IS getting pretty beat up from years of takeing out 2" and 3" trees and hitting rocks and other trash. I don't think i'd pay more for galv., but i am willing to pay more for the "better design" of the Woods Brush Bull. Robert

I've been thinking of buying a finishing mower and was impressed by the First Choice mower as well. I've looked at lots of them and the First Choice seems stouter than the rest. The dealer didn't have any literature available and their website is pretty crappy. Do you happen to know the blade speed of your mower? One thing I like about First Choice is that you can choose a paint color to match your tractor.

According to the Operators Manual the blade RPM is 2250 @ 540 PTO RPM. During my research I found that most mower manufactures quote "Blade Tip Speed" which is proportional to the length of the blade. For example, for the same size mower, Bush Hog specs say 15,600 with 21" blade; Land Pride says 18,130 with a 25" blade. The difference is the blade overlap. I don't have any info on the gear ratios of any of the manufactures gearboxes, but I suspect they are similar. I think that if you have enough blade speed to lift up the grass from the tractor track, and the grass is cut clean, any more speed is useless. On my three acres I used a ground speed that was comfortable, but the PTO RPM was about 450 (estimate)I got off the tractor and examined the turf carefully in the track area and it was lifted and cut smoothly. Three days after the cut the turf still looks evenly cut. This is my first experience with a finish mower and have only used this one once. I'm sure I have a lot to learn in terms of how to use it, but as far as the mower!!! I'm very pleased with my decision to buy this brand. I would highly recommend the Dealer where I purchased it and he had the best price, but I don't know if I would violate the Forum Rules by posting the name. If anyone has an opinion on this question please let me know.

This is a discussion board so lets discuss implements. Jim J would you mind telling us the dealer where you bought your finish mower? Thanks in advance.

I would be interested in knowing the dealers name also. I would also like to know the price and shipping costs you paid, if that's not prying too much. Please send that email if you don't feel comfortable posting the information here.

I've been thinking about buying a finishing mower for several years. I cut around my house with a riding mower, and everthing else with a 6' bush hog. The bush hog does a good enough job, but discharges the clippings to one side. I end up cutting over the windrow on the next pass, which means I am only cutting about 3 additional feet of new grass. I was thinking that if I had a rear discharge finishing mower, I wouldn't have this problem, that I would be cutting a full six foot swath on every pass. That would reduce the time I spend cutting grass on the tractor by half. I've never minded cutting grass, its just the not the only thing I want to do all the time.

A friend owns a farm implement business and will sell me a Caroni brand mower in the crate for $1,085. Price-wise, that seems like a good deal. But when I looked at the mower I noticed that it would be impossible to grease the spindles without taking the top plates off. I read a post in archives that said there were 17 bolts to remove to accomplish that. Seems like a bad design to me. The Caroni did not look as substantial as other mowers either. The bracing supporting the wheels screw directly into the deck - no box type frame. Seems that would be the first place rust would occur. The post I mentioned earlier also talked about Caroni's proclivity to bend the front wheel bracing on the tractor rear tires when lifting the deck. I think I've just about talked myself out of the Caroni.

A dealer in my area sells both the First Choice brand and Land Pride. The Land Pride sells for $1,395 for the 72" deck and the First Choice is $100 cheaper. I guess my choice is between those two. However, I wouldn't have a problem ordering one if I could save some money, and would definitely prefer assembling it myself.

All that said I have two more questions. The deck on the First Choice is huge, longer than any other mower I've seen. Does your mower have extra long blades? And is your mower quiet when it runs?

I purchased my mower at Carver Equipment Co. in Dunn NC and the freight was $95, I picked it up at the freight terminal. Al Murray was very easy to deal with and very knowledgeable about First Choice equipment. Check out their website for pricing. The operators manual does not give the blade length and it's not hooked up to my tractor so I can't lift it up to measure them. The length is 76" and the width is 45" and this is the rear-discharge model. I have quite a few trees on my three acre lawn and that's one of the reasons I chose a rear discharge so I could cut close to the tree reguardless of which side of the tractor I approach from. All of the grease fittings are accessable without removing any covers. In fact, now that I think on it, all of the friction points have grease fittings, the wheels, wheel pivots, blade spindals, idler pulley. Another thing I like is the belt covers are made of heavy metal not plastic.
