Bought one at auction yesterday for $400. Anyone know much about them?

I plan to put dolly wheels on it so I can pull it with horses.

Thanks

Joel: Is that the rake with 15-16 inch wheels on rear and uses two cranks at top of frame on front for setting height of raking cylinder. If that be the one they were a good rake. I have forgotten the numbers.

Yes it is, Hugh. This one is a 5 bar. Need to get about 10 teeth & adjust where the driveline goes to the reel so I can drop a link on the drive chain. It looks like the chain may rub if I don't do this.

These were very good rakes, a lot more gentle on the hay than some of the new technology. I had two of this type of rake, one an IH like yours and the other a NH. I used them behind Farmall SA and 130 with fast hitch. I found they worked better when tongue was carried high. about 18 to 20 inches.

With the rake on a level spot put enough blocks under tongue to give that 20" height, then lower the reel on cranks to what looks like good raking position. I think you will find that chain drive and gear box will line up better. I may be a bit high on this as I am just going from memory. Try more than one level. I just thought I would bring this to your attention before you build those dolly wheels for pulling with horses. I think your idea will work great. Those rakes pull a bit easier than the older ones with the high front wheels.

I have a JD with castor wheels & it is a real problem on my hills.

Thanks for the info on the IH rake.

Joel
