I have found one of each of these in similar shape. The IH needs fert. augers, but everything else seems to be in good shape. It has Fiberglass Fert. boxes. The JD has metal boxes, but they are good including the augers. The gentleman wants $150 for the IH, and the other gentleman wants $300 for the JD. How much better is the JD? I also found a 494 JD, but I am not sure what they want for it. I currently have an IH planter, so I have plates for that, but the JD plates would be no problem--The gentleman with the JD said he has a box full. Which is a better deal? We just plant a little sweet corn, we may try some field corn this year. We also plant a few rows of beans(string, limas, peas, etc.). Which is a better buy? I may keep the old IH around for the beans(the fertilizer boxes are junk on it, so that is why I am looking). Thanks in advance for your help.

Mike

Is that J D a mounted planter? Never had any experience with those unit planters, use a J D 494 or 494A planter.

The 56 is a better planter, more uniform spacing and all around better than the JD. Nothing in particular wrong with the JD (I have one) but the IH56 is better.

My dad has used a 56 planter for years without any problems. I dont know anything about JD planters but the 56 gets my ringing endorsement!
