I have been looking for a side delivery rake for quite a while and final found a David Bradley. It is in very good condition except it has a broken drive gear in the gear box. It is split length-wise. Is it possible to have these welded and last for any length of time. I will only be raking 5 to 10 acres per year.

Thanks,
Bob

My dad gave me his old JD 4 bar rake. I had had a JD 3 bar rake. But, one of the gars had worn down enough that the bars had slipped time and you could not get the teeth to drop straight down to the grownd when the bar was at low bottom. I welded up a few teeth and it worked fine. Of course, it was in a very enclosed area as I did not remove it. I also burnt all the grease from 70 yrs from it which helped. That was 20 yrs ago and I use it every year on 5acres. When you or whoevere welds it, if they have no experience welding with case, #1, get a good cast rod, sizew that you or whoever normally use. Die grind a V n the partds to be welded. Get alot of rags. Be sure to do it where no breeze is blowing to speak of. Weld 1in on one end of the gear teeth, then flip it over and weld 1in across the gear, on the other side. Thend the same , back again with the origi0onal side, over and over until you haver covered the entire gear. Find somthing pipewise to pt int the center hub so that you do not distorte the diameter and keep it in there until the gear is done and cooled. The trick in welding cast, is to weld it in little pieces at a time, and let it cool. Weld a peice and let it cool. The time it takes you to turn the gear around and weld frm the otherside and across the opposide side of the gear should be, if you do it slow, enough time to keep it cooling. If you weld it thios way you should not need the rags. If you have to leave it for any reason, put rags on the weld. They will burn up, but it will slow the cooling process a bit and be a help. Hope this helps

I would think you should be able to get it welded. The trick will be finding a good welder who is also good at welding cast iron. Cast iron is much more difficult to weld than steel and not everyone who can weld knows how to deal with cast.
