I have recently purchased a JD 495 4 row planter, I will be pulling it with a Ferguson TO-30, the previous owner kept his hydraulic cylinder that was on the planter, I have a cylinder to put on it , but my tractor does not have hydraulics other than the three point hitch lifting system....I have an external pump to put on the front and a valve body to run it with...but I don't have time to get it all put together before this planting season. So I am trying to come up with a temp. fix to lift and drop the planter to get me by for this year. I have been thinking of using a ratchet binder...but I don't know if they make them that long. Any suggestions welcome.

Scot: Don't let these guys deter you. Sure that little Fergie will pull the 495. Yes maybe not full of seed and fertilizer, but you probably aren't going to have more than 250 lbs of seed and fertilizer in it a any one time. I have pulled a 495 with a newer MF 35 full of seed and fertilizer. Just helping a friend one day I know I could have pulled it with my Farmall 130.

your little ferguson will not pull the planter full of seed. you need something about 40 horse to pull it.

Well I'll tell you what Mike, you buy me a bigger tractor, or let me borrow yours and everything will be okay. But for now, I'm going to make due with what I have, and I'll bet that "little" ferguson will do just fine. It pulls a 2 bottom plow just fine, and it pulls my 8-1/2' disc just fine, it grunts a little to pick it up, but pulling it through the ground no problem. I'll let you know the results, because we will be planting in about 2 weeks. Weather permiting.

Scott: Go to your MF dealer he can sell you an add on hydraulic valve for that tractor complete with instructions for mounting, for about $100.

What's wrong with a Ferguson?...or are you refering to the size of the tractor?

I remember seeing a picture of a Ford where they used a master cylinder that was compressed by the lift of the 3 pt arms to drive a slave cylinder that was used to lift a snow plow.

Give a holler to Ultradog, on the Ford N board for info on that idea- it's either him or he knows who did it. Otherwise, take the time to tap into the existing system or add one. Cranking a binder on each end of the field to raise and lower the planter is..... ..... downright..... .(end word of your choice), unless you plant at night, with all of the lights off.

I should have specified, that I'm using the planter to plant sunflowers for a dove field. I have three spots to do....one spot 1/2 an acre, the other is almost 2 acres and the third spot is just over an acre.....I know it would be a lot of work, but worth it when september comes around. You mentioned tapping into the existing system....someone mentioned this to me before, how would I go about doing that....We have a shop manual for our ferguson...and I have read it from cover to cover...and couldn't figure out how to tap into it....please expand on that...

I've done those size food plots with a over the shoulder broadcast spreader, then just pull a harrow over it. Easier than cranking a planter without hydralics. Good Luck

On the right side there are 2 places you may be able to tap into. The bottom one may be 1/2 by 20 TPI and the top plug is probably pipe tread. If you use a one way cylinder you can raise and lower cylinder via your handle on the right side. Now all you have to do is figure out how to keep you lift arms down. If you use a 2 way cylindar you can return the oil via the diff. drain plug.
