I saw a model 37 baler today with a bale thrower that was powered with a small gas motor on the baler. I have a model 46 on which I've seen a direct drive shaft from a belt driven pully on the fly wheel to the bale thrower. Is the model 37 an older baler than the 46 and and it was IH first attempt at a bale thrower or was a separate motor an option.

Charlie,

The model 37,along with models 27 and 47 were built after the '50s model 46 baler. I think 37 came out early 1960's. In a brochure I have for the model 46 it says about the bale thrower: "Cleated rubber rollers on the No 10 Bale Thrower take the bale as it leaves the chamber and toss it into the wagon. Bale thrower has its own air-cooled engine. Just speed it up to load the rear of the wagon...slow it down to load the front...all from the tractor seat!"

When my New Holland Super 69 was new the first thrower I had was gas powerwed by a Briggs engine. It never worked very well. Broke three crankshafts the first season. It had a flywheel, but it just seemed that little crank couldn't stand shock of bales hitting belt. Before the next season NH did a recall and replaced entire thrower with their new pto drive unit, no charge. I thought that was indeed a good jesture.

Neighbor used to have an IH with a Briggs powered thrower. IH bale throwers are easily identified by the absence of thrower belts. They used 3 rolls above and below the bale to toss it into the wagon. Tim, Ludke did build throwers for both Ford and Allis.

I wonder if that was an after-market thrower? I believe Sears sold one in the catalog. A-C had an engine-drive thrower, too, made by Ludtke? I think Ford may have used it too. Probably the same as the Sears unit. Or, somebody fitted up the first New Holland thrower to that IH baler.
