Tell me where I can find info. on this machine. It's really what I call a silage cutter, the real name is Ensilage Harvester made by John Deere in the years 1937 and 1938 for sure. I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me here. Thanks Richard

Richard,

The only information I can find on an ensilage chopper from the '30s is a small (2" X 3" or so) picture in Don MacMillan's "John Deere Tractors and Equipment - 1837-1959". It shows one being used to chop hay.

The caption below the picture is, "The company's first ensilage harverster designed for corn, being used with a raker-bar green-crop loader to chop and load alfalfa in July 1937".

The pictre itself is not very helpful, but I could try to scan it and e-mail it to you if that would help.

Richard: I don't know the answer to your specific question. I do however remember the term ensilage quite well. In the area where I grew up , and during the 1940s and 50s That was the only term you ever heard farmers use. They would also use a term like,"I am having my hay ensiled this year. On the hay side of ensiling it went from ensilage to silage to haylage. Haylage of course being slightly different as it was dried substancially. Over the years I have heard both ensilage and silage used on corn. My late father probably used the term ensilage until his passing in 1978, even when we discussed haylage.
