Just bought a 1209 mo-co to mow with, and would like to know if it makes a differance on what width rake I buy to go along with it. There are a LOT more 256's for sale than 258's. TIA Dave

If you maximize the swath width, you can get by with the 256, but the 258 will give more leeway and pick up stray hay at the edges of the swath better. I had a 56 and 489 haybine, always thought I'd like the wider rake better. As you say, there aren't that many 258's around.

we cut with a 1209 and rake with a 56 but we set the haybine for the baler pickup so if it dries good we can bale without raking

I thought the difference between 256 and 258 was the number and spacing of teeth (more and closer together on the 258), not the raking width. I may be wrong . . . .

According to the NH rake brochure--
256: overall width = 10'3", raking width = 8'6"
258: 11' and 9'6"
The 258 also has 100 versus 90 teeth on the 256 so their standard spaceing seems about the same, but the 258 CAN be fitted with 155 teeth!

The 256 should do fine with a 9' mower-conditioner since it can easily be set for a swath of less than 8'6".
