I bought a MF #3 baler the other day that had been sitting in 'God's garage' for way too long. The plunger is stuck pretty bad. I cleaned it out and soaked it in liquid wrench, but still no-go. I'm beating on the end of the plunger rod with a sledge. Does anyone have any interesting tricks that might help me out here.

I had a #10 MF baler that sat in the rain for years, and it's plunger was stuck badly also. Soaked it with diesel fuel, which I think works better than wd40 because it leaves a lubricating residue. What I did was put a long piece of pipe into the flywheel and kinda hang/bounce on it while another guy continued to pour diesel on the plunger. Make sure the guide bolts around the plunger are backed off. Saw no reason to disconnect the plunger from the crankshaft at that was the easies way to apply force to the plunger itself. We got it unstuck in a couple of days. Eventually baled with it. It never twisted the wire very well though, but the bottom line is you can get them unstuck using leverage. Becareful of beating on things as you don't want to bend anything, even slightly.

IT WORKED! - but I went and bought a functioning JD 14T at an auction anyway. I may finish the resporation of the #3, but now I have some time.

Thanks,
Bruce

Thanks - I'll give that a try. No more pounding, I promise.

I unhooked what I am calling the 'plunger rod', and the rest of the thing is free. The end of that rod (that normally faces up against a surface on the 'crank') is where I'm pounding with the sledge.

I would be interested in yours. If it is free (the plunger that is, not the cost), then I'd probably use the free one to bale and the stuck one would be parts. How is the rest of it? Tires hold air? What part of Iowa? This one trailered very well and I could go 50mph down the freeway right through Minneapolis.

I've told myself I'm never buying an implement that has a tree growing through the middle of it ever again, even if it is only $45. Let me know.

no trees in this one. Looks all complete. I have not messed with it yet. Friend got it in to crush and thought maybe someone could use it instead. Tires were both up when last seen it. Located in southeast Iowa $65.00 obo It is no3 Massey Ferguson.

OK - if the plunger is not stuck, then I'll have my father-in-law come take a look at it - possibly next week. I don't want to buy another stuck one - I already have one of those :}.
