Can anyone tell me the positive and the negative of these? Also, How hard is it to change the clutch out on one of these? Any info appreciated!

Scott

Had the Case version and was a very good machine, pulled with Farmal H, sold for $1500 in 1982 when we quit the dairy, would cost the same now if could find one in same condition to by, 2 reay ago when I was thinking about going back into hay looked at 7' New holland in junk condition dealer wanted same price $1500, would like to have one now, when we bought it the dealer had to do some repair, befor it was delievered loaned us a new Gehl, Heston-Case was 10 times beter machine but older than the Gehl

one other thing,,the PT10 with the lower cylinder has a gear box up above the rollers and it uses what looks like a giant rubberband, The other PT10 (case 555) doesnt use this,,when you get in heavy hay the rubber band tends to slip and causes a jam...Jim

Which one do you have,,hesston made 2 different PT-10's one has the cylinder on top and is the same machine as a Case 555 ( this is a good machine) the other has the cylinder on the bottom,,I have had one of each and the bottom cylider one was a piece of junk, it was always broken and I had to do repairs more then I ran it,, the other style with the top cylinder as I have said is the same as the Case 555, I love that machine,,I can use it behind my farmall H ,,,the other one I couldnt use on the H as it pulled to hard,,,Jim

I don't have one as of yet . There is a auction coming up close by me that has one on the sale bill but needs the " slip clutch" replaced. I don't know which of the two models it is or if there is anything else wrong with it . It is being sold "as is" so I wouldn't put a lot of stock in it. What is a fair price for one that needs work?

a fair price would be whatever you are willing to spend,, I personally wouldnt spend over 50 bucks on it. I can buy one right now for 200 that has nothing wrong with it . But then again the area you are in seems to determine prices , here old equipment is practically free,,,,Jim

I have a Hesston PT-10, I would agree with Walt, it either works or its broke, I have some welding done, and I also need some additional welding done on the counterweight, I replaced the slip clutch, last year, no big job very easy, and rebuilt the cutter bar with new blades and bolt on with higher end hold down clips. The biggest thing is to make sure the timing is adjusted correctly for what you are cutting, I had a lot of problems and after the big belt broke as well, it clogged big time and the old belt broke, another thing I need to do this year is replace it, I finally bought a book, and read the timing issues, the reel must be set right to push the hay into the roller bars.. if it is too soon or late, based upon your hay, it will clog up... other than that it works faster than my old MF sickle mower, which is very slow,, but works as well.. If I had the money,, I would buy a disc mower,, but I have to use the old machines,, and baby them along.. I would be interested in a cheap parts machine as well...

Joe,

Didn't know about the timing issue, don't have a real book on it. Can you explain a little about it if it's not too long.

Thanks,

Walt

Sorry for the late reply, was in dallas for business, back home.. the timing is set for when the reel, sends the hay into the rollers,, this is set on the left side of the unit, the side where the belt is, the other side is the where the slip clutch is, if you have heavy hay, you move it up, so that the hay would enter the rollers sooner,, if it is moved back, the hay would enter the rollers later,,, and could clog the system. I'll try to scan this and send it to you, but the manual is still available form AGCO and not too expensive, I would suggest that you order it..

I have a Case 555 Windrowler which is the same thing, in the past five years I have replaced several bearings around the pitman, welded it a couple of times around the arm, changed the belt tightner around. Getting ready to replace all of the blades. It's a good machine when it works as Dad says you can cut alot of hay, but it either works or it's broke. Don't know what you mean about the clutch, there are several slip clutches on it, never changed one. My gear box leaks a little, have all new seals but don't want to mess with it, just add some oil once in a while.

If anyone out there has one for parts I would be interested in it, email me.

Walt
