I am building a 3-point fork attachment for my JD 420. I am wondering if there is a proper dimension for the 3 point set up. I mean the width between the 2 lower arms and also the distance from the lower pin to the top (or 3 point) pin. My neighbor has one and the forks tip down as he lowers the load, Seems like there is some geometry in this some where??

Thanks for the help, JD Earl

Use a hydraulic cylinder top link so you can control the fork angle.

Hydraulic cylinder for a toplink is an option, but a normal toplink is an adjustable screw, and is used to set the angle of the attachment. It just takes time to readjust it for each attachment.

this is how i made the toplink bracket, there are 5 holes and by using different holes you can get it to stay close to level or tilt back which is handy for handling round things like logs and poles which tend to want to roll off the forks. there are also 3 positions for the bottom pins, i usualy use the middle position.

Measure the vertical distance between the pins on your tractor and the pin hole where your top link atttaches. If you can make your fork with this same vertical distance from the bottom pins the lift arms and top links will be parallel and the forks will move with no tipping.

I would vary the wide of the forks just enough so that you can get into a somewhat standard pallet.

My manufactured bale fork is a little too wide and is therefore an aggravation. I can still use pallets, but have to pick and choose which freebies will work. I then set the pallets on old railroad ties so that they don't rot. Makes for easy mowing when you can move stuff easily.

Go to the American Society of Agricultural Engineers site for standard dimensions of various categories of tph. Address is www.asae.org

Let me know how yours turns out, I am thinking about making one this year or sometime as well. At my work we have 2 parts forklifts that I could probably get the whole front lift from, and then I would make it to have full hydraulic tilt and raise just like on a normal forklift. I think it would probably work best on my 1755 Oliver, although I could also use my Massey 285 on it. Donovan from Wisconsin

The vertical distance between the lift arm pins and the top link pin of the lifted implement determines the lift angle. A shorter distance on the lifted implement will keep it more level. Years ago (30 or so) we had two 2-row corn planters mounted on a tool bar with several top link holes. Different tractors used different holes. Lifting it level was important when the seed and fertilizer boxes were full. We used what we had since we couldn't afford a pull type 4-row.

The way to make a three point tool, implement, attachment, etc. move straight up and down is to have the top link the same length as the arms on the bottom and for the vertical distance from the front of the lower lift arms and the top link the same on both the tractor and the attachment. Doing this would require forks to be farther back than you really like.
