Getting ready for the first summer with my Ford 671 and needless to say will need to do some mowing...question is what type mower is best for my needs-a hog or a finish (unfortunately cannot afford both!).

I have an acre of finished lawn around the house and about 3 acres of pasture out back the barn...appreciate the input. John

A brush hog will not give a lawn type cut, but will do a fairly decent job if you are not too particular about appearance. Keep in mind that they are designed to cut only down to about 3" high. And if your yard is not fairly flat, you will likely get some scalping in uneven places.
A finish mower will be OK on the pasture as long as the pasture is relatively clean grass. It is not designed to cut brush, hit rocks and stumps, and the like.

Wich do you prefer? I can set my bush hog pretty low. Does a fair job but then I am not picky about my yard either, sometimes it gets tall enough I have to use the bush hog. You probably could set the finish mower high enough to clip pasture probably not as fast as a bush hog and you probably will clip pasture two three times a year at the most. You will comprise on one or the other just where do you want to comprise. Myself I would go with the brush hog I think it would last longer.
