A local used tractor equipment dealer has on his lot a Ford 520 baler. It is right small package and looks like it would work well in these small fields around where I live. Can anyone tell me about this baler, hp requirements, years made, parts avaliablity and reliability.

Thanks in advance,
Bill

Ford made 250 balers in 1965. They sold for $900 new off the lot. I run one with an 8n with a high low tramasion for ten years. They were made to be used on a 2 plow tractor or naa ford. Any 23 hp tractor should run it. As for parts i have a parts baler. I know you can get bill hooks from a new hollond dealer. I think most of the knotters are the same.

I have not bought the baler. It was sold and then returned to the dealer because it would not tie a knot. As such, the price is really reduced. I may reconsider. I like it's small size, but am somewhat concerned with it's age and ability to get parts, etc.

Thanks,
Bill

Bill,

I put up a few hundred bales last summer with one of these. Seems to be a decent little baler. The bale is a smaller dimension, which works well for my wife when she is helping. I believe the parts manual is still available. I haven't bought any parts, although I did weld the needles back together (they came broken).

Sam,

I've got a Ford 520 square baler that needs a new wheel on the baler size gauge. You mentioned that the parts manual may be available, can you tell me where I might find one? Or, better yet, where might I find parts?

Respectfully, TJ

There are only 2 brands of used balers to consider, especially older models. New Holland or Deere. Do not buy a Ford, Case, AC, IH or any other. These brands were second rate when they were new, and parts are difficult to find and generally more expensive.

Ford, as far as I'm aware, never made their own baler. Could have been made by NH for all I'm aware. I own a Massey #12 that still works great on any of my tractors, but espescially on my Massey 285 and 165. As long as it's in good condition, and can still make a bale, they are all good, but some are better. I agree, Deere and NH are good, but so are Massey's. Mine almost looks identical to an older NH a neighbor had for a little while, but then he brought it up north. Donovan from Wisconsin

I believe the last Ford baler before the New Holland merger was made by Gehl. Gehl attempted to sell it on their own for a few years after the Ford contract ended. The local Gehl dealer had one, I remember it looking the same as a late Ford except for the red paint. I have heard the name Long Manufacturing mentioned when early Ford balers are concerned. If there were any other companies involved, over the years, I don't know. I do know that Ludtke made the Ford bale throwers.

Along similar lines, most people don't know that late-model IH balers (435, 445) were made by New Idea. CaseIH replaced them with the Hesston-built centerlines a couple of years after the 1985 merger. My neighbor has a 445. A New Holland it's not, but it does an OK job if it's maintained correctly, as the knotters it uses seem to be very fussy compared to JD, NH and Hesston knotters. Parts haven't been a problem for him.

If you want something a little newer, there's a 3rd brand to consider. The Hesston centerlines work well (the CaseIH centerlines were built by Hesston). I have found parts and service for them is no worse than that for Deere and New Holland, at least in my area.
