Would like some thoughts on what type of haybine I should buy for 20 acres of hay. I would like something inexpensive but reliable. I have a 60hp tractor.

newholland 479 great cheap machine for a few or a few hundred acres. Dad and i each cut with one 60 acres three crops every year. A tire here a belt there just normal wear and tear replace sickle every two years. look for one with good rubber on rollers even bad rubber will work$$$ just take extra day to dry. One haybine paid 175 the other with better rolls 300.

One question about the rollers: I inherited a neglected 479 which I'm restoring. The rubber is
75% there, but drying out. Is there anything I can do to prolong the life of the rollers? Is it
possible to add rubber in the same way as a
tractor tire can be repaired?

Thanks,

How much could I expect to shell out for an older fairly well maintained Hesston 12 ft hydro swing? I spotted an 8 yr old Gehl in good shape but very similar unit at the dealer and they want $2800 for it. They seem a bit too proud of it for my budget. thought I would try using the offset style for a change. I won't have the model number until Wednesday and will repost my q and will be looking for the operators manual.

Hesston PT10 is an excellent older machine. Hesston makes MoCos for Gehl and Case IH. Please no color wars, the man wants info. I speak from my experience. Sonny

The early Gehl sidepull with the 10" wheels was their own design; God bless them. Later, Hesston built the early Gehl hydroswing (same as the 1014), and maybe side pull models. Later yet, Gehl bought Owatonna's line, and went from there.

Current CaseIH hay equipment is from New Holland. Until 2 years ago, it was indeed Hesston. I though Gehl machines were from Owatonna?

I have a New Holland model 488 that has been an exceptional machine. It has a 9 foot header that is just right for smaller fields. It is dependable, easy to work on, and parts are readly available. There are no dought other good machines out there but I do know that the NH 488 is a good one.

The 488 is a good machine. they sell a lot more parts for this machine than they do for a 492.

A good 9 ft. haybine should work just fine. What brand you get depends on your preference and how much money you have. I have always used a ford/new idea mower, same thing, different colors. Most mowers out there are good though

I have a IH 1190 for sale, used it up to 1 year ago. Was a good machine, got a discbine, dealer wouldn't take it in trade because there's not a market for haybines much anymore. Mine could use some work but I will sell it cheap if you are interested.
