I am looking at a good condition 501 w/ 7' bar. In looking at most posts on this forum, looks like it works mainly on older (8N, etc.) tractors. I have a 2000 model year NH TC33D - will this work on this machine? I am planning on using this to maintain ditches & banks along edge of field. There is a lot of thin bamboo (1/8 to 3/8" thick) on the edge of the field. Can this cut it?

Thanks from a Newbie!

I have a 501 - 9' bar - have it on a WHite 75 hp front wheel assist - works good - have to go awful slow - haven't figured that out yet....
i mow any ditches that I would be willing to drive on (I am in definite fear of rolling) (so stay away from any major slopes)

I have a 501 and have mowed lots of small pine trees up to about 1 inch without a problem. Be real careful around the edges of fields though. A 501 does not mow metal fence posts well! Guess how I know that? Oh well...

I have found that the guards from the New Holland dealer fit better on my mower than the ones from my local farm store. They look similar, but they aren't.

The 501 is a good mower, but I don't think it was designed to go much beyond horizontal. I mow the roadsides by my property to make it look more tidy (since the County doesn't seem to do than anymore), but I have never had much luck mowing very far into the ditches. But maybe there is an adjustment I don't know about. Good luck.

I've used a 501 for years. First behind a Kubota and now with a John Deere. Good mower. It will work on your NH but you will probably need to change the lower 3 point arms on the tractor. The mower won't mount to the newer, thicker, more curved lower arms. I just change the out with a set of 8n lower arms. Fairly cheap and easy to do.

Tom- one other thing to think about is how well the mower will mow your ditches and banks. To my knowledge, the 501 is a pitman drive mower. The pitman will be the limiting factor in the angle above or below horizontal that can be mowed. Most belt driven 3pt sickle mowers can mow from nearly 90 degrees above to around 30 degrees below horizontal. 3pt, belt drive mowers include NH 451, JD 350, several later model Fords, etc. Good luck on your search, Kenneth

I plan on getting my 501 on a 1720 this summer. Perhaps the eye-bolt stablizer will interfere with the raise/lower clamp, but I figure it will get worked out.

The mower should handle stuff less than a 1/2 inch thick with no problems at all.
