I have a couple of older JD hydraulic cylinders that are in need of some repair that I aquired with the purchase of my JD 60. Where do I start in determining any repairs. I dont think I even know how to break one down. Are there any repair manuals or pages showing an exploded parts detail?
Any help would be great. Thanks, Eric

I have an old JD hydraulic cylinder apparently for an A, I have used it for many years but now it has started to settle quite a bit and leaks a tiny bit out from around the shaft. From the A parts book listed the parts for the cylinder, some were still available and some not. There really isn't much to one and think if parts were not available from deere they would be from a hydraulic specialty store. Parts available from deere were expensive and figured it would cost more to rebuild than to buy a new cylinder. If you want it for the correctness than I would just dig into it. Nothing will spring out at you. The cylinder should have a number on it somewhere that will identify it as to what tractor it was designed for

Eric, I have a parts manual for JD 80/820 and it has an illustrated breakdown of the cylinder with all the parts numbers. I have an I&T repair manual for a model R and it has complete dissassembly/assembly instructions. I'm sure the manual for the 60 contains the same info.
With the more modern cylinders, there is usually a repair kit available, as I just looked one up on the JD parts site yesterday for a cylinder on my model 1000 field cultivator. Usually it is best to replace all the seals, O-rings, gaskets, etc. when repairing a cylinder. I don't know if repair kits are available for the older cylinders. Of course, if there is something more serious than leaks, like a bent piston rod, cracked piston, etc., then you will have more extensive repairs to make. To replace the seals, O-rings gaskets, etc., you usually only have to remove the end from the cylinder that has the piston rod through it. It really isn't very difficult to work on these and I don't think it requires any special tools.
Hope this helps and good luck.
David
