Hi all. Ok I have a few questions about a haybine at an upcoming auction. My neighbor is having an auction Friday night(weird huh?) and I thought about bidding on his haybine. It is a 488 9' cut. Looks real good but hasnt been used in about a year or two I believe. He pulled it with a 5000 Ford so I know it wasnt overly powered. I looked at it tonight and seems to be a good solid machine. The chains looked good along with the rollers. The toung hasnt been pulled out or broke so thats a plus too. It looks like it has been painted, but not recently. As far as I know he has had the whole thing rebuilt about 3 years ago. I was wondering are these very good machines. Also what years were they produced? I have teh ser# if any one could give me the year to this thing also. The ser.# is 490554. Also what would one of these run in fair condition(price wise)? It has been sitting out side since the last time he used it. Thanks for yalls help!!!
John

Hey John,
I had a 488 and it was a real good cutting machine. I would still have it if it were not for the ex witch of the universe!!! Can't help you on year identification, the dealer could do that for ya I'm sure. Depending on how old it is and what condition it is in will determine costs. I have seen them go from $1500.00 to $4000.00 or better. Main thing to look for is good rollers and check the lift links from the axle to the header. Replaced them a couple of times and they are a load of fun!!!! Hope some of this helps. Holler at me via email if ya want to know some more about the 488.
