I have a 1955 TO 35 in which I'm trying to decide what type of bottom plow I should purchase. The tractor is in decent shape but I'm sure it doesn't have as much HP as original. The feild I would be plowing is a little over 2 acres and has been worked before. Any thoughts on what size plow I should be looking for?

I'm in South Carolina. Wish I was closer, I'd take you up on your offer.

Hi, I have a really nice 3 point "Dearborn" 2 bottom plow that I used behind my Ford 3000 to plow 6 acres when I bought the land 5 years ago. It is just taking up space in my poll barn. I am asking $275.00. I live near Ann Arbor Michigan. I don't know were you are at.

if southern Ohio is in traveling range, drop me an email and we will discuss a two bottom 3pt mounted plow for you. if London Ohio is better then TriGreens has an auction (4-24-03)last thursday of each month for equipment and will have a fair selection of plows for you. Otherwise keep your eyes open and look for a private sale as a dealer needs to cover cost plus make a living along with some profit.

Hugh is correct. Recommend you get 3-point plow with 2 14" bottoms. A Massey Ferguson Model 74 would be ideal, and you can easily find a 3 bottom with 14" bottoms and take one off in a heartbeat. The old Model 74 are good plows and have shear bolt protection for stumps, rocks, etc. I have rebuilt 2 of them: one with 4 14" bottoms, which I still have, and another one with 4 16" bottoms.

Thanks for the advice. I'm new to doing anything with a tractor other than bush hogging so this will come in handy. Just wish plows were'nt so expensive. I've gotten pricing in my area for 2 bottom plows for around $550.00. Just seems pricey. Used plows seem hard to find.

Kevin: While the pitted rust is important, another item that can be costly is wear parts. Landsides, moleboards, points and shins are very expensive. What can get even worse is someone having used plow when some of the above should have been replaced thus wearing plow bottom frog and frame.

Personally I have never seen a rusty plow that wouldn't clean up. Just take it to a sand or gravel pit and drag it through the sand or reasonably fine gravel. Pitted now that when pricing a plow call it a new molboard needed.

Remember this above all, a good 2 bottom plow is worth $500. If you have to replace all wear parts it will be more than that.

Kevin, you should do some looking arround. I've seen several plows used for arround $100. If you get a used one, make sure the boards are not rusty. If they are, just a little surface rust won't hurt much. DON'T get one that is completely rusted....it'll never scour. Scouring is when the dirt will not stick to the boards, and it'll also turn over easilly. With a rusty one, all you'll have is a funny looking dirt blade (just pushes dirt, doesn't turn it)

Great advice...so as long as the plow is not pitted with rust I should be OK?

Kevin: That TO 35 is the fore runner of the MF 35, right or wrong? I have seen many of the MF 35 pulling 3x12 plow. I would seriously look at a 3 point hitch, 2 bottom if I were you and go with either 12" or 14" bottoms.

Single bottom plows have their purpose, but it's not what you are doing. Many of them are 16" or 18" bottom and unless you are plowing quite deep they don't do nice work. Great for plowing new land or land over grown in bushes or small trees.
