Hi- I asked this on the tractor talk but only got a couple of replies and no negative brands so am repeating. I know within the past year or so there have been several posts about good and chintzy brands of brush hogs. I looked thru archives and don't see what I need. I am about to buy and would like to hear about the bad and the good. Don't be afraid to be brutally honest and thx in advance for your help.jm

Both John Deere and Bush Hog make excellent cutters of all sizes. If your just going to clip grass in the pasture or around the turning rows the cheaper lesser known brands would probably suffice. I can't say that I've ever heard anyone say "I sure own a sorry brand of bush hog", but I'm sure they're out there. Good luck.

I have owned a Bush Hog brand for many years now and I love it. It is very heavy duty and holds up very well. I have mowed with other brands in the past and they all do pretty well but from what I have seen the Bush Hog brand cuts much better. Thats just my opinion though and I'm not trying to put down other brands. Make sure to get one with a slip clutch. You won't regret it and it will be easier on your tractor and pto.

Regarding the slip clutch, if you buy a used one, and at least once in the spring you should loosen the clutch up and smear some grease or oil between the plates. They tend to stick together if left alone for too long, then you get a twisted PTO shaft or destroyed gearbox.
