Looking for some info on this baler I found one for sale and it would be nice to bale hay with out needing help. Belts seem good might have trouble with the tier. Want to make sure it's not a White Elephant

I bought a used 5580 3 years ago. It has been a great baler. I had a 5800 prior to that. The closed throat design was a pain in hay that wasn't perfectly dry. I don't think you could do wrong with a 5580 unless it was totally worn out.

I have ran a 5540 for about 10 years. Replaced a few bearings, 1 sprock, the drive chain and had the belts relaced. Last time I checked parts are still easy to get. If the price is right and your tractor can pull it you will not go wrong with this bailer.

Bob, I recently bought a used Hesston 5540 baler. It is the 4' x 5' version of the 5580. The next day, I purchased an owner's manual on Ebay for $5. I baled with it last week for the first time. After two bales, a roller bearing went out due to rust. I got a new one the next day and baled the rest of my hay. I was really happy with it. It made good, tight bales and ties quick with the double electric tie. Of course, I am accustomed to a Vicon soft-core baler that clogged the pickup on every other bale - I came close to setting it on fire (purposely) the last time I used it.

I have had a 5580 since purchased new in 1982, excellent baler. Electric threader can be a pain, keep cutoff knives sharp and adjusted. Square roller will wrap in real wet conditions, otherwise no problem. No problem with parts.
