I bought a 400 cyclo to plant corn with and have had mixed results. The first field I planted was 35 acres and had very few minor problems. The next field 22 acres was a huge headache. The seed would not feed into the drum properly. I did use a different type seed, the seed I used on the 35 acres was a medium round I started with a small flat in the 22 acre field and I could only go about 500 ft before the drum began to run out of corn, my seed man had some large rounds that I tried which was better I could go maybe 1000 ft. do these planters need a small to medium round to work right or maybe add graphite to the seed? I was really beginning to like the planter at first and want to continue using it. Anyone out there know what to do?

Pressure equalization tube is too small. As long as hopper is at least half full, everyhting is ok but as hopper empties down, pressure in drum is higher than in hopper and blocks seed flow. We first fixed the proble by throttling pto way back, and after planting corn increased tube size to 1.5 in and problem went away.

Hi Jeff. Have you checked for leaks between the two halves of the seed hopper? My 400 would break the poprivets and leak air out there. this caused the air to blow the seed up the seed tube.

Jeff,my first thought is you have a collapsed Air Tube going from the Blower to the Seed Hopper.Second thought is a bad seal on the Hopper Lid.
What pressure are you running?
You can check for leaks by running it and using soapy water.
The population problem may be from underinflated or wrong (smaller) sized tires.
I'm curious to see what you find! Hope I've helped

That is a good point Joe, but I did check that, in fact the drum has a slight pitch to the rear. I have it hitched to a 1066. I had planned on using my other tractor,a ford 6000 but the hydraulics wouldn't let the planter float right and the markers wouldn't drop. I planted a quarter acre of sweetcorn and it worked great. Other things I thought of were a high humidity day which it was, and I checked the seed tube it is clear.I'll clean the hopper the tube and the drum and try it again using graphite if the rain lets up enough to let me get back into the field within the next 30 days. I also had to figure out the seed and fertilizer rate it didn't correspond with the chart. It plants about 4000 more than the chart reads but I like the planter, first one I had that the monitor works. That monitor is the greatest thing since sliced bread, I'll never plant corn again without one, no more going back and trying to figure out where the planter quit working and replanting partial rows. Thanks for all the input TP,Joe and Hugh.

Jeff:
Joe has a good point, I can see having that hitch too low affecting flow of seed. I bought one of these planters new in 1974, always used it on 656 with 16,9x38 tires, that held hitch quite high. If you have a tractor that is low on drawbar that will change pitch of seed tube quite a lot.

I never had any problems with seed flowing and I used all shapes and sizes. I have heard of spraying the bottom of seed hopper and the tube to seed drum with graphite. I personally never used anything along these lines.

I have never had that problem with mine. I believe that I usually use round seed, but I use it for small patches of sweet corn also, and that seed is anything but round. Do you have the planter level when it is in the ground? Maybe you just need to adjust the hitch.

We always mix graphite in with the seed, coat the drum and tubes with it also. They say(from what I remember from our manual) that it works best with medium rounds. We just got some plateless to use in ours and it worked well for us. We also had some problems with ours last year(First time we used it). Once we got the seed/fertilizer charts figured out and found we had oversized tires on it we planted a nice stand of corn with it!

Need any more help just ask!
