I wanted to get a couple of small forks from a junked forklift at a local junk yard and they wanted $100 for a set of 3 foot forks. Is this reasonable? I want to make a pallet mover for my 3pt hitch.

You can make some fairly rugged forks by using two pieces of channel for each one, 4" with the legs down and 3" inside it with the legs up. Use pieces of 1/4" rod or old bolts to bridge the gap underneath and put a couple inches of weld every 6-8". Make them long enough to put a gussett where they join the frame. A couple feet of 2" inside the 3" there will help too. I used 3x3 square tube for my frame.

I whole heartedly agree with chris. Especially if you are going to be using for seed pallets which are longer than the standard pallet.

If you have notions of doing bulk bagged seed don't touch the 36" ers with a ten foot pole. I have one 48" and one 42" on my lift and I shudder a little every time I do this job with these mismatched forks.

All that being said you will find the fork lift will be one of the handiest tools you have on the farm. When I got mine put together I almost immediatly started putting things on pallets. It is a real back saver.

Just My 2 Cents

JT

I work at a forklift dealership parts dept. For a pair of NEW 3,000 lb. 36" forks we get about $150 for EACH fork. If the forks you are looking at are in good condition and within spec. it sounds like a good price.

Chris, I was in the same predicament on my Bobcat, have a friend who works at a forklift dealership. He gave me 36" or 42" forks and a sideshifter bulkead both of which had been worn beyond the OSHA specs. After forks have been drug around on a concrete floor they wear too thin to meet specs. With the price of scrap metal he was happy to get rid of them and coming off a 5000# forklift they are good for more than I will ever be able to pick up. Might be worth your time to check at a dealer if you have one around.

Maybe try and get the rack the forks mount on thrown
in, you will have a lot less fabricating to do, and
they would be adjustable width then. Longer forks would be nice, but I bet the price jumps a lot. You
would probably do better dollar-wise to make some
fork extensions from channel iron to slip over the
shorter forks.

Price sounds a little high, but try to find a 4 foot pair, you'll be happy you did in the long run.
