I was looking at an I-H 990 hay machine at a local dealers on Saturday. I'm not familar with these machines, it looks to be in working condition, the knives are rusted but they can be sharpened and /or the sections replaced if they are faulty. The rollers appear to be a steel roller with steel crimpers running on a flat rubberized roller, both in good condition. I'd like to hear from you if you have experience with these machines, I'm guessing it could be 20 years old. I'm curious what you think the value of this type of hay tool is. I'm not a big farmer and it would likely cut my hay for me but my experience is that machinery dealers will ask a ridiculous price for this while you might get one at auction for a song Thanks in advance....Mike in Exeter Ontario

We purchased a 990 new in 1971; a 9 foot along with a 454 tractor. Was a good machine that would cut side by side New Holland. In 1974 traded for a 230 windrower. My 990 was a good machine as my old one is still working. Check at Vincents what parts might hard to get.

Mike,
I use a 7' 990 and have had good luck with it. It's not as smooth running as my friends NH 472, but it will cut as fast as I care to drive through my rock infested fields. Prices in this area are much lower for a 990 than a equivalent NH machine. Mine had sat outside for several years when I got it. New belts and a seal in the gearbox has kept it going the last 4 years. While it may not be state of the art in hay making machines, mine sure beats my old sickle bar mower. Good luck. Roy
