Have old bush hog. Gear box has fill plug on top of geat box and another plug about 2" - 3" below PTO shaft connection. Might have another plug underneath deck for draining lubricant (haven't looked).

Not sure if plug below PTO shaft connection is 'level' plug or gear box should be filled to the very top using fill plug on top.

To what level should gear box be filled and with what type lubricant?

Thanks

I don't have a manual either, but think about the differential on a car. The fill/full plug was below half way down the case. The turning gears pass through the oil at the bottom and lift it up onto anything else that doesn't reach down into the oil.

My mower has a large fill plug at the top, a large drain plug under the pto input, and a tiny oil level plug just below half way up.

the top plug is to fill the gear box,it should be a bigger plug than the other one. the other plug is the oil level. oil should be 140w gear lube.

You said it's an old brushog. You might want to fill the gearbox as the john stated and then wait about an hour and check under the deck to see if the gear box is leaking any of the gear oil out the bottom. The lower bearing seal wears over time and the reason you have to fill the gear box is because it is leaking out the bottom. At first the lower seal leaks when the machine is running and the box has warmed up. After a couple years it may be leaking period. We sometimes fill with grease when this occurs or a very thick oil (STP). Good luck.

Fred,

I don't think it is leaking. I have been using the hog almost 2 years and look in the top plug hole, still see lube (no gears). As I recall, I checked it when bought (used). As I recall, the lube was pretty near the top.

I guess i'm puzzled by the 'level' plug being so low. I would expect tht if I removed the 'level' plug that a lot of lubricant would leak out.

Got me beat.
