I just got a 5ft hog. It's either a Howse or Howco, says it was sold at co-op stores. It's got a huge gear box and and the male part of the drive shaft but the end that hooks to the pto is missing. I've looked at a couple of used dealers around here but have had no luck in finding the right size half shaft.

The male end is 1 1/4" square and the end I need probably needs to be 2' long. Any suggestions on finding a replacement?

It's also missing the top link and I was thinking of just using a chain. Though from reading thru some of the posts here some don't recommend it on hilly ground. I've got all hilly gound and was concerned about a solid top link binding up. Maybe I should be more concerned about a chain.

Don't use a chain, but if you notice on some newer hogs, they include about a 6 inch swivel piece that gives you a little more up and down movement. A salvage yard will be the place to get the shaft. Unless you know of some other old equipment sitting around. The old stuff used square shafts, all the new is going to the triangle shape. You could also go to a farm supply store and buy the entire shaft instead of just half.

I was really trying to get away from buying a new one. I think I'd end up with more in the shaft than I've got in the whole hog.

The top link attachment point at the top of the hog is slotted so it does give some amount up and down movement. Do you just use the lift lever as your height adjustment while cutting. I'm new to this 3 pt. stuff.

If you lengthen your top link properly, the mower will only be able to go down so far and then the rear wheel will hit and the front of the mower will not even be able to hit the ground. Make this adjustment on flat ground and you will see what I'm talking about.

Then as you are mowing, the mower can 'float' to the contour of the ground. Your 3pt. arms most likely do not have down pressure. If you grab them and lift them, you will see what I mean. The mower will raise the entire three point system as needed.

Some farm supply stores carry shafts and U-joint parts so that maybe you could make your own cheaper than a complete one. I bet you could find an old one laying around if you look hard enough.

I will give that a try. Like I said I'm new to hogging. I too thought I could find some old parts laying around I could assemble one from, and still hope to. But the grass is needing to be cut! May have to put my old sickle bar back on til I can get this one together.

Bite the bullet and buy a new one. I thought I could find the other half too this past week for for my fifty dollar deal on a hay tedder. The co-op had all the seperate parts at about the same price for as a whole new one. It is long enough to use on a post hole digger when I need it. Have to look at it as a "two-fer".
