Cole MX12 Planter Story

Last Wednesday, I rushed the 30 miles from my work in Chattanooga, Tn. to my home in Dalton, Ga. to beat the forecasted rain and get some small pentance of a garden planted. We have had so much rain, it has been impossible to date, except for a few raised beds close to the house.
Anyway, I bolt up the Cole MX-12 Multi-Flex planter to my Dearborn cultivator (converted from 2 row to 1 row), apply a little grease here & there, put on the appropriate seed plate for Silver Queen corn, fill the fert. hopper with 6-12-12, and off to the garden. I left the tops off the hoppers, and had someone walk behind me to be sure plate was picking up seed, and that they were falling into the planting tube. All looked good!

Planted 4 rows of corn.
Changed Seed Plates, planted 4 rows of green beans

On the last row of beans, I decided to uncover a few seeds, just to be positive.....well, I could find NO SEEDS! Yet, seeds were gone from the hopper!

Got a small flashlight & looked down the planting tube - There was ALL my seed!!!! Mice had made a nest in the bottom of the tube and stopped it up! I had put ZERO seeds in the ground! Poked a stick up the tube to unstop it, and caught 1/2 a grocery bag of corn & bean seeds.....Had to separate by hand and plant again!!!!

Guess I learned a lesson.....

Just thought I'd post a message here to let interested parties know about the status of Cole planters.

Powell Manufacturing ceased operations and production of the Cole planter line in September 2002. Powell Manufacturing no longer has an active website. The Covington Planter Company, Albany, GA purchased the assets and tooling for the Cole planters from Powell Manufacturing in August 2003, and are currently setting up the production lines. Repair parts and seed plates will be the first items available (Winter/Spring 2004) with complete planters available shortly afterward. Covington's website is still in development, but can be used for contact information.

I have two rows of Stanhay 840 precision planters.

I've planted 1000s of acres of wheat and other crops and never had problems finding seed.

But finding planted seed behind these units is next to impossible. Yet you get a fantastic stand spaced just as it should be.

The units sure save a lot of time of thinning vegetable stands.

If you are like me, you'll have to 'learn' it a few more times. ;)

I just got a 15 row bean planter..... .
