Where do you buy kudzu seed, starting out my new farm with 10 acres of pasture for some cows I hope to get. Neighbor tells me that kudzu is some of the best pasture to plant. I've never heard of it before, but he raises a lot of cattle. Where do I buy this seed. Thank you very much for your help. I hope to get it planted by the first of June.

So Ron, what are you planning to get back at your neighbor? He got you good, you'll have to come back with something. :)

ya know - here in the south "he needed killin'" is a valid defence in court. i rekon that anybody plantin' kudzu might be in the same situation.

I'm still fighting the multiflora rose battle. Fortunately the goats love it, but they can't get the fields that I don't have fenced yet. Hard to believe that was brought in.

And bermuda grass, too...another thing that was going to save the farmer.

also had "crotaler". was promoted as a land builder in '30's. once you got it almost impossible to get rid of it. also the seed was poison to anything that eat it. many load of soybeans and corn have been turn back at mill because ot it.

kudzu is also known as "the vine that ate the south". if you don't know the meaning of that, then contact your county extension agent and they will fill you in. i think your farmer friend is joking you.as far as the best pasture in your area the county agent can tell you that, honestly.

See how he reacts to this: Tell him you'll plant your leftover seed in HIS pasture, as thanks for his advice.

Sounds like an episode of Green Acres!Who was the county agent on Green Acres? Seems like Mr. Haney sold a sack of kudzu seeds to Mr. Douglas for the very same reason. Or was that Ebb that had some magic beans.

I think the agent was Mr. Kimball, kind of a goofy guy in a jeep. That was a great show. Never heard anyone do a good impersonation of Mr. Haney.

it is a legume i believe and will add nitrogen to the soil. but like said above i think it has become pest in the south where it doesnt winter kill.there are better plants. but then kudzu was once considered "miracle" plant! some are ok in small areas of the country but are advertised and sold as nationwide "cures" for all you farming problems. with the exception of plants the animals wont eat or considered illegal in your area , i take joel salatin's advice and plant what grows in your road side ditch. for me that would be red clover, a fescue, bluegrass and various weeds that sometimes have more protein than soybeans .

Around here the only thing that grazes on it are ground hogs and goats. There are tales that it will cover up a road if left untrimmed for a couple of weeks. If I tried to plant it on my land, the neighbors would burn me out.

This is a joke, right? If your neighbor actually has the stuff you will have it all too soon. Really nasty stuff.
