Cleaning a gas tank

Got the old Wisconsin on my "new" NH 66 baler running yesterday, but had to run a fuel hose direcly into a can of gas to do it. The baler had been left out for 3-4 years with a full tank of gas. This had evaporated to about half a tank of crud--some mix of gunk and I assume rust--that I can't get to disolve. The fuel pickup in the tank is plugged up too. I used fresh gas and drained some of the crud out, but there's still a lot in there. Tried carb cleaner, too.

Any way to get the tank cleaned?

It doesn't leak at all and is very sound, so I'd like to clean it up and maybe use some gas tank liner to keep rust out of the engine. Any suggestions?

thanks,
Tom

First fill the tank with a galllon of laquer thinner and let it sit to to dissolve all the bad gas. Then, drain out the thinner and fill up the tank about 3/4 with water and strong soap. ( Liquid laundry detergent works ok). Add a couple hand fulls of clean washed pea gravel and a couple handfulls of roofing nails. You can shake the tank by hand (kids work good for this) or toss it in the back of your truck for a few days, I even have a guy who took a small tank to the hardware and put it on a paint shaker. This will break all the rust loose. Empty the tank of all the stuff wash it out good, and dry it with the exhaust of your shop vac. Then, buy some tank sealer and use as directed. It will be good as new.

i have also heard of attaching the tank to an implement pto shaft as a shaking device.

your other choice is to spend some money and take it to a reputable radiator repair shop and have it boiled and sealed. however, this is guaranteed to remove any paint from the outside also.
