I have a JD #5 mower that I will be using to cut hay this spring and need help with the board at the end of the sickle. I don't know what you call it, but it moves the grass over after it is cut so that you have a gap between the next swath. If someone has some pictures of it and how it attaches I would appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Bob

I made mine out of 3/4" plywood and fashined a piece of 3/4X3/4 angle iron along the bottom and formed it to fit the curvature on the front or leading edge. I never felt very comfortable about using one of steel because like the other fella mentioned I tended to get a little close to the fence on occasion and would rather that the "wooden" grass board broke and not something else. good luck

In this country they were refered to as "divider board". I think they are pretty universal. Some haved a litttle adjustement on the round extended part to raise it up or down to increase or decrease amount of room it leaves. Can be lowered if hay hangs up and bunches coming off the board, some times it may even be removed. David B

The parts manual calls it simply a "grass board".
Both the Operator's Manual and Parts Manual are still available for the #5 mower. Good investment to have them handy.

I use the same swath board on both my #5 and #8W mowers, would imagine the #9 is the same. Mine is a combination of hardwood and steel. You need to have a long enough piece of metal on the inner end to keep it from tipping down when you raise the sickle. Mine has the traditional stick to push taller hay over. As was mentioned it is held on with a bolt with a spring on it so that it will flex somewhat if it hits something instead of breaking.

That's a good point. My #9 board bolts to a piece of steel. If you were missing that flat steel piece you would be in for some additional work to fab a new one.

Swathboard. Lotsa tractor supply houses sell a generic replacement, usually made out of steel. Wooden ones were ok, but they did break alot.

Most attached with a bolt and a large spring that would hold the board tight up against the outer skidshoe, yet allow it to flex under heavy loads.

Good luck.

I have a JD #9 mower and I don't know how similar they are in that area. I need to replace my swath board soon and could make some notes and take some pics when I do. Probably won't be until Saturday, though.

I seem to break a swath board about every year (I try to mow too close to the fence), so I have about 6 of them cut out and ready to install. I cut them out of scrap plywood I find at construction sites.
