After resurrecting my in-law's '44 Farmall A, and getting it running quite well, I drug a loader out of the woods and intend to restore it to working condition. My Father-in-law had used it some time ago, and remembered the hydraulic cylinders leaked quite a bit. I took one cylinder apart and found the leather seal on the piston was quite worn and cracked. Need some replacement leathers to start with, and we'll see how it works.

The unit is from Henderson Manufacturing, and it is a model B.

I found Henderson on the internet and called them...they offerd to send me a manual, but they have no parts, although the women said they may have some info on the leathers that they will send with the manual.

Has anyone sourced such parts before, and if so where did you get them? Has anyone replaced the leather with rubber?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I would like web address so I can contact Henderson. I have a '41 C with loader and would like to get a book on it.

I had to fix my old freeman loader and the same problem. No idea on numbers or source. The couplings were cup'd inside to squeeze the leather and provide the seal. So the thought of tossing in an O ring didn't look like it work. What I ended up doing was purchase some flat leather from a saddle makers shop. Seemed like it was about 1/4" thick and not the spongy stuff you find a craft shop. Traced the old and cut new ones with a zacto. Mine used 3 or 4 on each side. They compress down pretty good, 1/16-1/8". Worked great.

Need to clarify to make sure I understand what you did. Did your 3-4 flat pieces replace a single cup-shaped piece? My leather is cup-shaped, around an inch deep. The cup fits around a round aluminum block that makes it rigid, and that block is bolted on the end of the ram against another aluminum block that acts as a guide inside the cylinder.

Thanks for the suggestion.
