John,
I would back up what Hugh has said, I've been using a 461 for the last 12 yrs. It has been very reliable, we bought it used and have only had to rebuild the right hand gear box and the wobler on this machine also. I use mine behind a 50 HP 400 Farmall. If I'm not mistaken these were built around 1965.
Hope this helps!

Hey guys thanks for the info. Sounds like a well designed machine that has stood the test of time.
If all goes well I might become the proud owner of a 461 N.H. Haybine. Thanks again. John

John: One other item I forgot to mention is I rebuilt only once the wobble gear box and the right angled gear box in roughly 20 years. That machine saw some quite heavy service in years 14 to 20 as it had a 1066 and New Holland 890 forage harvester chasing it. I have seen my 656 Farmall and that old haybine go right around the clock to stay ahead. That is reliability for an old machine. You could rake two of those 9 ft windrows together and 1066 would travel faster on harvester than haybine. I don't ever remember a piece of New Holland forage equipment letting me down on anything major during croping. Fine equipment.

John: I my opinion the 460 and 461 haybines were the best New Holland ever built. If you take notice it has a 6 bat reel which gave a more even flow of material through them. Same machine 460 had one steel and one rubber roll, whereas the 461 had the meshing rubber rolls. I ran mine several years with Farmall 300 and later 656D. 300 used to break about 2 doz shear bolts per year, get lugging a bit and governors would kick in. I ran that machine 10 years with 656 and never broke a shear bolt. I had mine close to 20 years, it filled 2 24x70 silos and 300 ton of hay last ten years.
